This discussion reminds me of the discussions I have read about personalized Parker 51s, which usually seemed to be on the barrel. Some like the personalizations and favored keeping them, some wished them gone. I personally felt some discomfort with them on pens I bought used, and I replaced all those barrels. In cases where the barrel or other part could not be replaced, as with a name on a plum fountain pen, I didn't buy the pen. I considered some Montblanc pens with personalized clips, but just didn't buy them. I knew something would bother me about those pens, and there were other pens in the resale market.

I did a Waterman Patrician clip recently, I gold soldered the engraving then smoothed and finally electo plated the clip again, customer had supplied a mint condition clip to replace engraved one, he ended up with a mint condition spare clip.

Those who are gone don't care, but about half of those next new owners in the world do.
If the next "new" owners, who I won't know or be concerned about, are willing to pay me for non-naming rights there might be something to consider.

Would the decision be the same if name was that of a famous or significant person. I just have one pen with an engraved name, a well known artist.

What I do...I take a Hacksaw blade and cut the clip off ( If I am unable to unscrew the clip) No rocket science
And use the pen without the clip.
I have a few, very prestigious pens with out their original clips. They look like when they came as the original pens.
It's only Later I found the sellers sold me those without clips. Then I guessed why they did so.
I realised It is reasonable for them to do so as it is impossible to have a replacement part. Some pens looks original without their clips. That includes the Mont Blanc Pens.

    Precious bolt cutters.

This so reminds me of my OH yesterday. It has taken him so long to find a replacement wheel for his wheelbarrow and yesterday he finally had one delivered from Amazon. All the sizing was correct apart from the collar parts either side of the hub that proved to be too long that he couldn't screw the holding bolts back on when they were slid onto the wheel axle. He had to cut the ends of both pieces off at the wheel hub with a hacksaw.

Works like a charm and I'm confident it looks better than my Montblanc pen cap would look without a clip.

Funny you should post that. Yesterday I walked by the shuttered Montblanc boutique in King of Prussia that serves the Philadelphia region, and a poster still hung in the window offering the Montblanc carryon luggage trolley with wheels. I thought of taking a photo to later revisit the irony of the store closure (sort of like the defunct Montblanc motorcycle helmet), but I continued on.

Why do pen companies that once made wonderful products make such bonehead choices, leading them to...who knows? (Rhetorical only.)
