Default Ink Review: TWSBI 1791 Prairie Green

Today I'm reviewing TWSBI 1791 Prairie Green ink. This is one of the TWSBI special edition inks that is available either in single 18ml bottles or as a set of 6 x 18ml bottles of different coloured inks.

"The 1791 series comes from a book written in China in the year 1791 called “Dream of Red Chambers”. It’s one of China’s 4 great classical novels and TWSBI picked colours out of the buildings and descriptions within this book for this series of inks."

TWSBI 1791 Prairie Green is a fairly light yellowish green unsaturated dye based ink that flowed quite well and didn’t feel dry through my pens. Lubrication across the paper wasn’t bad but it wasn’t quite as smooth as the other inks I’ve used in this series as I heard more feedback. On the other hand I experienced no start-up problems even after leaving the cap off while I was doing dry times and comparison ink tests. I saw a little shading but no sheen.

The main pen used for this review is a TWSBI Eco with 1.1mm stub nib as I wanted to check how well the ink would clean out of TWSBI piston filling pens. I found that the ink cleaned out easily and it washed off of my hands easily.

Thanks to The Writing Desk for supplying this sample for review purposes.

    • Flow Rate: Good. Neither particularly dry nor wet.
    • Lubrication: OK. Others in this series felt smoother.
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: Unsaturated ink.
    • Shading: Some shading seen.
    • Show-through/Bleed-through: None seen.
    • Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Not seen.
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen.
    • Staining (pen): Not seen - very easy clean-up with water.
    • Staining (hands): Easy to wash off hands.
    • Clogging: Not seen. Seems unlikely.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof and has no water resistance.
    • Availability: Available in 18ml bottles and as a combo pack of 6 bottles from The Writing Desk and other outlets worldwide.

Thanks for the review, Chrissy. I've yet to try any TWSBI ink. I won't start with this one, though. Not my cup of neon tea...

Thank you Chrissy - another really excellent review

As you know, I like these, and this one might be my favourite of the pack. I currently have it in a Prera with a CM nib and have found it slightly dry, but that's often my experience with Pilots. I've got it in mind for the next fill of my green Narwhal, as it's a bit yellower than the Sailor Studio 260 that's in it at the moment, which leans a touch too blue.

I have no idea why, given my usual preference for slightly murkier colours, but I have a real soft spot for a zingy lime green!

You're welcome. I've seen brighter neon greens than this one.

You're welcome. I was a bit undecided if it was slightly dry or just slightly less lubricated than the others. As flow seemed about the same I decided it wasn't as nicely lubricated. It's a nice shade for this time of the year.

Not exactly warm outside here either, but plenty of sunshine.
