In the UK, Cross was the brand that was used for employee of the month - and commercial branding. If you want to impress an official.who doesn't know a lot about pens you could get a Cross Century rolled gold set for not a lot of money on e-bay (make sure it isn't engraved). They are nice looking pens - and a lot of them ended up in a drawer "for best" and never got used.

Montblanc was the pen given to directors and folk signing fat contracts. Again, lots of these turn up on the UK market that are practiaclly unused.

A new Parker has the advantage in that their refills are ubiquitous - at least in Europe every stationer has at least a box of 5 royal blue cartridges. Both the IM and Sonnet (the Sonnets' nibs are better) look nice, and you usually get good discounts from online retailers. Don't pay the list price.

It depends in your budget - less than £50 a Parker IM, under £100 the Cross Century II, over £100 the Parker Sonnet.

At this point, are Parker and Sheaffer real brands anymore than the Yafa owned Conklin?

Good point. Parker, Waterman, Rotring, Sanford are all sub brands of Rubbermaid Newel. Sheaffer a sub brand of Cross, Conklin and a host of others sub brands of Yafa. Of course Sheaffer for years was a sub brand of Textron, and then BIC before being bought by Cross.

But I was going even further than that, I suppose (and trying to be humorous).

There is no Conklin Pen Co. It is just the name of a long dead company that Yafa puts on some of its pens. Even when Sheaffer was owned by Bic, you could still call it an actual, real company.

How far woild you go with this? After all, Montblanc is a sub-brand of Richemont, along with Cartier & Dunhill.

Nakaya is an offshoot/subrand of Platinum.

Diplomat is owned by Yafa too, and their pens are distinct from the other Yafa brands.

If the only "genuine" brands are ones that are not owned or incorporated into another company/brand, then you are not left with many brands.

ST Dupont, Pelikan, Pilot, Lamy, Staedtler, Visconti, sntini and Leonardo for argument's sake.

I think Yafa is only the US distributor for Diplomat.

I think the latest Sheaffer I bought was the 1996 Holly set or a used Prelude caligraphy set. I have bought a few Parker Sonnets and late Jotters. All these were acceptable. I am not sure if Parker and Sheaffer so much compete as just turn out so-so product, like all the others mentioned, at least that's what I think of all of them. Get a good broom and sweep them to the side so the good, older pens can be got at.
