Default Ink Review: Cult Pens Deep Dark Louise ink - New

Cult Pens Louise is one of three new inks in the “Deep Dark” range that are made for Cult Pens by Diamine Inks. These three new inks are also currently included in the 16th birthday celebration set of Cult Pens 16 x 12ml inks.

Louise is not a saturated ink and isn’t particularly dark but it is a very nice shade of gold/yellow that can show off plenty of shading especially with finer nibs. I found it flowed reasonably well and felt moderately wet with the pens I tried it in. It’s lubrication across the page felt variable depending on how fine the nib was.

Handwriting is easy to read with Louise and that’s always a bonus with yellow inks. In my opinion it looks much nicer on white papers than on cream papers as they show up the gold shade better.

My review sheet was written on Clairefontaine Triomphe 90gsm smooth coated white paper, and I saw no signs of feathering, spread or show-through. It behaved very well and dried quite quickly.

It didn’t stain my hands, or my pens and was easily removed with one wash, or a quick cold water rinse.

Currently available in 80ml glass bottles, 30ml plastic bottles and 12ml bottles within the 16th birthday ink set from Cult Pens web-site.
Many thanks to Cult Pens for sending me this ink in exchange for me providing an unbiased review.

    • Flow Rate: Moderate
    • Lubrication: OK slightly lower with finer nibs
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: Not saturated
    • Shading Potential: Nice shading seen.
    • Sheen: None
    • Show-Through: None worth mentioning on all of my papers.
    • Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Not seen on any paper I used.
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after several days in the pen
    • Staining (pen): Not seen after several days - very easy clean-up
    • Staining (hands): None easy to wash off.
    • Clogging: Not seen.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof and shows no water resistance.

I like this a lot - I haven't even opened mine yet though! It reminds me of the Diamine special for LCdC which can't be found here, but which I use a lot in gold pens, so I suspect I'll be getting more of it.

Thanks as always for an excellent review Chrissy!

    You're welcome.

There aren't enough yellow/gold inks around that are easy to read in handwriting. This is one for those who like writing in gold coloured ink.

Every time I see an ink in this shade, it reminds me of diamine sepia, then when I pull out sepia I'm surprised. Regardless this screams to me as some sort of (non diamine) Sepia.

    Thanks Chrissy!

    You're welcome

I instantly picked out Diamine Sepia as a comparison ink colour. It's far more brown than Louise.

OOoo, I like this! Thanks for the review.

Looks similar to Kobe #21 Taisanji Yellow Ink, which I love, but is pricey.

You're welcome. I haven't used that Kobe ink. Sadly I also find them pricey and difficult to source.

I thought I'd do a quick comparison, and my instinct wasn't far off on this one. The written sample is more accurate than the swatches as these were done on different paper (having recently changed the brand I use).

They're not identical, but there's very little to tell between them, and the new Louise is certainly close enough for me to be a replacement for the hard to get Comte D'Or.

Thanks for comparing them because I didn't have anything that similar. Compte d'Or is an ink I've never tried. I wonder how close their chromas might be?

It's funny you should say that - I was planning to do them tomorrow - I have literally nothing in the house I can use until the shopping arrives later today! I have a couple of others to do, so I thought I might look at these too - I have a feeling they're going to be pretty close, but I've been surprised in the past!

I have a similar feeling.....but am always happy to be surprised.
Just learned that someone I wrote to in the US at the end of November never received that letter. There's a surprise but not a good one.
