Default Ink Review: Cult Pens Deep Dark Matthew - New

Cult Pens Matthew is one of the three new inks in the “Deep Dark” range that are made for Cult Pens by Diamine Inks. These three new inks are also included in the 16th birthday celebration set of Cult Pens 16 x 12ml inks.

Matthew is a reasonably saturated ink and is a straight dark grey that leans neither blue nor green. In fact it sits on the border between being a dark grey and an almost black ink.
I found it flowed well and felt quite wet with the pens I tried it in. Lubrication across the page felt nice and smooth.

I didn’t see much shading with the pens I used and there was no sheen.

My review sheet was written on Clairefontaine Triomphe 90gsm smooth coated white paper, and I saw no signs of feathering, spread or show-through. It behaved very well and dried quite quickly.

It didn’t stain my hands and was easily removed with one wash. It easily cleaned out of my pens with one flush in cool water.

Currently available in 80ml glass bottles, 30ml plastic bottles and 12ml bottles within the 16th birthday ink set from Cult Pens web-site

    • Flow Rate: Good - quite wet.
    • Lubrication: Good - smooth.
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: Quite saturated.
    • Shading Potential: Not much shading seen.
    • Sheen: None.
    • Show-Through: Slight or none on the papers I used.
    • Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Not seen on any paper I used.
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen even after several days in the pen.
    • Staining (pen): Not seen after several days - very easy clean-up.
    • Staining (hands): None. Washed off easily.
    • Clogging: Not seen.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof and shows no water resistance.

Thanks Chrissy. That must be one wet ink. Your fine Safari line, looks a broad to me
Normally I don't do greys, but this one looks almost tempting

Thank you Chrissy - another excellent review. I tried this one out last week (I got the little mini bottles in the recent CP sale), and whilst it's a nicely behaved ink, I don't think I'd bother with a bigger bottle. I have other greys I like more, and this one felt more like a diluted black than a grey in its own right. I think I like my greys to have a bit more going on!

You're welcome Although the Safari with F nib was dipped not filled it wrote quite wet. The B writing is much wetter. The only pen converter filled was the LX with M nib.

    You're welcome.

I'm not a great fan of any grey inks but I picked up and mentioned the fact that Matthew sat on the border between being dark grey and almost black because I knew that would be a comparison that many grey ink users would make. I can easily imagine this looking more like black if it's kept in a pen for a while and starts to evaporate a bit especially as it leans neither slightly blue nor slightly green.

On the other hand what else would users expect from an ink that is sold as deep dark grey?

"deep dark grey" = black (cf, Parker Quink Black)

    Awesome review, Chrissy.

Thank-you Chrissy! It's interesting how the color changes on the different papers. Behaves like a chameleon ink.

    You're welcome TS.
I suppose deep dark grey is therefore one alternative way of saying black while also covering the "almost black" option
