Joshua's latest update at the Pelikan's Perch indicates severe problems going on at Pelikan. Workers have not received their promised Christmas bonuses (instead paid in installments, the latest installment long overdue), benefits to those already retired have been cut in half, and the June 2021 paychecks have still not been issued to their workers. This has been covered in German newspapers, and some of the factory workers protested in the parking lot during lunchtime.

The worker's union has also become involved, and the regional government is looking into the matter.

I certainly hope Pelikan can get their finances back together. They had major problems in the past, and had been bought out by another firm (Goodace SDN BHD) in 1996. Since then Pelikan seemed to have been doing alright, pre-pandemic.

It actually seems like they're doing well, making a profit and growing in Asia? I don't much understand this sort of financial stuff but is this necessarily a bad thing?

You ask a fair question...no, not always a bad thing. But big change is unsettling. And the current ownership has been making and selling fountain pens, so their commitment to this has not been particularly questioned. But new owners? It does help that this announcement states that the "fine writing" sales have improved and has begun to turn a profit (strong growth in Asia, as you note).
