    Default sheaffer flat top pats

I need the black bottom to a sheaffer flat top. Where would I look for a part? Thanks.

    What's a "black bottom"?
    Vintage. Cursive italic. Iron gall.

A couple of the early Sheaffer Jade pens had black finial and end-barrel treatments. Here is a quick desk photo of two of mine, a 5-30 and 7-30 models. Note the black ends, but they aren't alike: the end of the barrel is (I believe) a solid piece of black plastic, whereas the end of the *cap* is actually a black band, as a look at the end of the cap shows you jade material. The last bit is too hard for me to capture at the moment (late at night) without better lighting, so I'm linking to an image from the net:

That is going to be very tough, especially since I've never seen them separate before. You are more likely to source at least just the barrel from a pen with a missing cap. Do you know if it is a 5-30 or 7-30 size? Searching eBay is an obvious try, but you might also look at that Rob has at Five Star Pens, maybe drop him a note with a detailed ask.

I've never seen a pen with the black end missing, since they are fused to the end of the barrel. Is there a hole there, or is it simply smooth and closed? They did make pens with barrels that will fit the 5-30 and 7-30 caps, with the same celluloid, but without the black end, so its possible that your pen could be a marriage.

Mine is a 5 30 and it goes straight into the tube of the pen. You can see the spring from the end. Mine is a 5-30 It also needs a new sac. I believe its a 16 DSC05912.JPGDSC05913.JPG

Then the original got broken off. It would likely be cheaper to replace the barrel than to have a new one made, or to buy a donor, cut it off the donor and fix it to the pen.

If you want a decent-looking pen to write with, you might head to a sewing shop and look for a button of the right size and color. I have a Sheaffer Jade flat-top of similar vintage and the endcap is the same green as the barrel. But black would look fine and be easier to get. If it's a bit large, you can puzzle out a way to mount it in a drill chuck and file or sand it down. Another possible source would be a small black plastic bottle lid.

I had a Wahl-Eversharp pen missing an endcap. Made one from a old coat button with an interesting pattern.
