Default Ink Review: Akkerman Delfts Blue

Today I’m reviewing Akkerman Delfts Blue ink.

Delfts Blue is named for delftware pottery that has been made since 17th century.
It is a single dye blue ink and is a straight, light, unsaturated blue. It’s a really attractive shade of blue.

It is a very well behaved ink that didn’t suffer from any starting issues when I put the uncapped pen down to do swab tests, dry times and water resistance.

It dried within 15 seconds on the Xerox Colorprint paper and didn’t smear after it was dry.

Akkerman Delfts Blauw is available in special Limited Edition 60ml bottles from Akkerman Den Haag web-site, Vanness Pen Shop & Anderson Pens.

    * I think it has a doppelgänger in Diamine China Blue, but the Akkerman bottle is worth the extra.

    • Flow Rate: Medium.
    • Lubrication: Smooth.
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: Not saturated
    • Shading Potential: Some shading seen.
    • Show-Through: Nothing worth worrying about.
    • Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: None seen.
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after several days in the pen.
    • Staining (pen): Not seen after 1 week - very easy clean-up.
    • Staining (hands): Washed off of my hands very easily
    • Clogging: Not seen.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof, but shows a little water resistance.

Lovely! One of my favourite straightforward blue inks, and such a happy colour. I can't find a single fault with this one from the outer packaging, to the fab bottle, to the ink itself. I have a soft spot for the old fashioned 'royal' blues - probably the result of using so much Pelikan as a child.

Thank you for the review Chrissy - it's reminded me that I have a pen waiting to be filled with it.

My bottle of Diamine China is just a tiny bit darker, with perhaps a bit more red sheen, but in honesty, I'd have no qualms about using it to refill the Akkerman bottle

Your review has also reminded me that I must get some nice cream paper - I'm surprised at how much I like this colour on the sample. So another thank you!

    Great job Chrissy
My one and only Akkerman. Always have a pen inked with it. Really love it, especially with broad and flex. Plus on absorbent paper it has decent water resistance....

One of these days I'm going to buy a bottle of this ink from Akkerman. If anyone has bought from them directly is there a particular number of bottles that always works for the first level of shipping price?

I ordered 10 60ml bottles in 2018 and was only charged 12 euro/bottle, and shipping (down under) was only 30 euro. From memory, 5 bottles was the threshold to make shipping affordable, but you are much closer...
    Vintage. Cursive italic. Iron gall.

Thank you. I still feel a long way from the Netherlands for shipping and import purposes at least. I'm not sure I could find 5 bottles that I need right now but I will bear that in mind...

From memory Chrissy, three bottles were still in the lowest shipping tier last time I ordered (this was earlier this year, when they came back into stock. I seem to remember there being a big jump when I added a fourth bottle. I think the shipping cost might have gone up a little since then, though.

They are amongst my absolute favourite bottles, so I'm happy to pay a bit of a premium for them!
