    Default Tomoe River Paper

A pen pal mentioned in a letter last week that Tomoe River paper is no longer being manufactured.

The 'net revealed this post by The Well Appointed Desk.

Thankfully, Goulet Pens still has some as of August 5, 2021. My Monday order arrived on Wednesday afternoon with the usual Tootsie Roll lollipop enclosed.

I have more TR paper than I'll ever use, so no personal effect on me. There are lots of great papers around now.

Given that TR was originally developed, as I understand it, for lightweight and disposable catalog applications... I have to wonder if the real issue isn't demand rather than supply or machines or pulp issues. Not that it really matters, I guess. The online world would seem to have decimated catalog shopping or any other application for such paper.

The digital world even seems to be affecting pen folks. The other day Lisa Anderson said she has gone all digital for calendar/planning. She's probably not alone. I know this is the first year I haven't purchased/used a paper calendar/planner in forever. Part of that has to do with Covid probably, but I was trending that way anyway.

    Interesting times.

I have a pad of original TR left somewhere, but when I discovered the 68 gr thicker version, I was hooked... that and Midori are my favourites....

I found some for sale that was cheap enough so I bought a couple of packs. And I have spare notebooks. Enough TR paper to last me for a long time. The 68gsm is more difficult to get here but never mind.

TR is still my favorite paper. I use the Seven Seas notebooks, so I have enough for a couple of years. By that time, either the TR issue will be resolved, or some other wonderful paper will be manufactured.

I have, over the last year or so, tried several other notebooks. Cosmo Air Light paper is quite nice, but for the price is much more expensive with less sheets. But inks look great on it. I have also tried Apica CD Premium Notebook, which is nice. And, of course, I still like Rhodia notebooks, and use them mainly for work related things.

I've had the Tomoe River paper. It's like classic airmail stationary. Therefore, I buy our own jbb's "vintage" typewriter onionskin paper that has similar attributes. See: https://www.etsy.com/shop/JBBPensPaper

Sorry Fred but I'm not sure I would agree that it has similar attributes. It shows through and bleeds through significantly more, in fact sometimes so much that it's hard to read what is written on the right side.

Oh, Jill knows I only want paper suitable for fountain and dip pen use, which is what she uses it for.

Yes- the US Tomoe River Paper distributor (Lion/Sakae TP Provider) has assured dealers (including me) that they have ample supply at least thru this year.
I carry original 52gsm in pads and journals. I also do 68gsm with Endless Works Recorder Journals!
