Mystery Ink #36 and #37

Can't go wrong with a chroma to really see what you got.

Had to re ink my lamy yesterday after I cleaned it out for this when I got the samples and used baystate blue for signing legal docs since it is more permanent so got I got it soaking just a bit longer and will have it cleaned out again for some writing samples and I might try some type of art if it's not too embarrassing haha

I have a guess about the green, clueless about the orange. I am probably wrong, as usual.

Here is my first sample of #36, I will have to do my inks one at a time since I only have my lamy since my Aurora decided break on me. I should have some more tests later this afternoon.

I've written with MI#37 a few times now and have decided I really like this ink. Nice colour, nice flow, well behaved. Thank you junglejim for sending it to me to try out.

So far I've only used it in my TWSBI Eco but I've written in my Clairefontaine notepad and in a new Miquelrius notebook. It liked both papers and I noticed that it darkened slightly while sitting inside the pen for several days.

Yes I thought that. My sample certainly felt smoother after a couple of days when it had probably slightly evaporated.

At long last, I was able to do a quick review of MI 37:

When I first started writing with it on general engineer's pad, then Rhodia, I wasn't impressed. I then tried it on Cosmo Air Light and my general sketch pad, and felt like I was slogging through the mud (which actually seemed appropriate with the color). But I then tried it on my regular copy paper, which is fairly smooth and fountain pen friendly, and the ink flowed nicely. But the best was, of course, with Tomoe River. Again the ink flowed and felt very much "at home" with this paper. While this is a great color to sketch with, it doesn't feel to me to be a good sketching ink, but perhaps for watercolor washes it might prove useful. It has absolutely no water resistance, but it does dry pretty fast.

Overall, This is a pleasant ink to use, particularly in wider nib pens. I really like the shading on this pen and the color is pleasant on the eyes. I am pretty sure that I don't own this ink. I like it, but I am not quite sure if I would want to buy an entire bottle. Perhaps. . .

As to which it is, the jury is still out.

Here is my review of MI 36:

Paper is Kokuyo Campus paper (I did post another writing sample on Rhodia a few days ago)

This is an interesting ink. It is quite saturated and dark. It flows well and feels somewhat lubricated, but seems quite sluggish on Cosmo Air Light and copy paper. In fact, it will not even write on the inexpensive post-it-notes that I have personalized for my business to give away to clients. The ink just puddles and smears. (And that is why I need to have better quality "swag" made. )

I also found it interesting that on all the papers I used the ink had little to no sheen, even in heavy ink drops. It doesn't really have much water resistance either.

As I said an interesting ink. I am still pondering what this ink could be . . .

A few more thoughts about the Mystery Inks:

Mystery Ink #36 - On the right paper, this is a lovely ink. It has some shading and flows nicely on most papers. But I use Tomoe River a lot and I use wider nibs (mostly B and 1.1 stubs). The ink plus a wide nib on TR paper is not a good combination. The first 2 or 3 sentences just don't dry. They stay very "smeary". I have had to use blotting paper between pages and even after several days it still smears. The same is true of Cosmo Air Light, although it isn't quite as bad. But, I can use this combination on Rhodia or Exacompa memo paper, copy paper or even my engineering pads with no problem. I am still not quite sure what this ink is, but it has characteristics similar to others I have used.

Mystery Ink #37 - I am really enjoying this ink. It is a bit drier than MI 36 and does not have quite the lubrication. But the shading is very nice on all the papers I have used it on. I have an idea of what this ink might be. I don't own the ink, so I can't compare.

Just a quick little note that the ink reveal for MI #36 and #37 will be on 20 September, which will be 2 weeks since the last participant received their ink flight. It is interesting seeing how these inks react on papers I don't use.

Here's my chroma for MI 37 sorry I'm a little behind had a medical problem come up with my mother which is getting more and more frequent as her dementia gets worse, but I'm trying to get some more testing done tonight.

I do like how this chroma looks and looking at others examples of 37 I think it would be an ink that I would like better than 36 but I'll know more once I write with it

Now time to get my lamy cleaned and get MI 37 inked up. I still want to at least try a drawing and painting with MI 36 though I can only draw stick figures, so I'm going to have to work to make it look like what's in my head.

I'm still on the fence with both inks for writing. But for sketching and washing they are fabulous.....

If I didn't know better, I would say, they are made by the same maker....though JJ normally sends different inks...
I would say, the first one is probably Birmingham Inks, Petroleum / Penn slate and second one Marigold...

A couple tests with MI 37 this ink is definitely more up my alley than 36 though I still like 36 very much

And my dreaded mead test, 37 did a little worse than 36 to me but that I can see a lot more feathering and the lines look fuzzy and the color really takes a hit with this paper soaking the ink in so much, but I always like to try since I'm usually using cheaper paper and I know with a lot of students or on the office you can't always use the best quality paper

My first guess about #36 proved wrong when I ran a chroma and washout comparison. Wonder how my other two guesses will fare, but 36 is VERY lubricated, and doesn't dry well on Life paper. As to 37... not a clue.
