I like Pelikan pens and I want them to survive. So I filled out their survey.

The only one out of 3 designs that I like (on the pen) is the gold leaves.

The other two looks like cheap screen-printed patterns which, when taken out of the context of the poster, makes those pens look cheap as well.

I have to say, I didn't like any of them. Now if the gold leaves were an overlay in a precious metal, that might be attractive, but as they are, they look like cheap Stabilo 'fun' pens for children.

I like the green one with the dress pattern. The leaves one looks a bit flat in comparison to similar maki-e pens.

I like the first one the best then the dress patterned one but I think that could be improved by having no green and just the blue ground colour.

    I liked that one, too.

And as Neil deGrasse Tyson said in his interview with Larry King, I find myself reaching for my Pelikans.

Meh. They’ll still write like the other ones.

I am rather curious about how the patterns will be attached to the pen bodies - printed?
I this case I doubt that I would like one of them...

The "printed on" possibility puts me off too. Add in the inevitable premium price, and I can't work up much enthusiasm.

What I don't understand with Pelikan is why they don't simply capitalise on their proven successes. The M200 Café Crème, for instance, was wildly popular, sold like hot cakes, and demands good prices in the secondhand market. Surely an invitation to try other solid colour combos, or the same colour combo in other sizes. But no. We get endless coloured translucents, which a lot of people will never buy because they don't like the look, and even for people who don't mind them it's getting pretty old now. Lots of people would love to buy an M605 with blue stripes, but they only made it as a limited/special edition and haven't revived it. Tortoises in any size or model seem to sell out toot sweet, and yet... I could go on. To me it's inexplicable why Pelikan are working so hard to not make money.

I agree that the company's obsession with translucent bodies seem to linger longer than it should. Pelikan's unique styling does involve translucent body, but, it has to be combined with their binde (body sleeve) technique.

Now, one idea they can consider is to design (and patent) a model where the binde can be replaced by owners. Then they can sell many different types of binde, maybe even some metal overlay (which will look awesome with that gold leaf pattern).

IMHO, translucent bodies make Pelikan's great writers appear reminiscent of cheap dime store (Dollar General?) pens. Oh, I own a clear M205 which is interesting, but I'd never claim it was a good-looking pen; had it been tinted would've only made it worse. (YMMV & etc., before anyone gets all hot under the collar about my subjective take on this.)

That's actually what Lamy did with the Accent - most of the 'binde' pieces out there are Lamy originals, but I've seen some nice custom ones too, and it's really not too difficult to make them. Hoping when I get my mini lathe set up to do a couple of exotic woods for mine!
