Default Replacing screw/washer for Montblanc 149 finial

In taking this Montblanc 149 apart to polish the metal bits, I noticed that the screw and washer used to attach the finial are pretty dirty. Are these proprietary sizes or can they be replaced at a hardware store? Or do I need to go through MB to get new ones?

I would just clean them up with a bit of decorroder. If you don't have anything proprietary, just make a vinegar salt solution (any vinegar will do) and once they're clean (use a nylon or brass brush to speed up the process if you wish), neutralise with a good dunk in bicarb/water (enough bicarb to make the water cloudy), then dry well.

ok thanks! i'll give that a shot, but i'd still prefer to get new ones if it's not difficult/expensive since these are 30+ years old.

I agree that cleaning and using the original parts is more likely to happen than finding new parts. Montblanc won't sell parts. If you must have the screw and washer in pristine condition, buy a cheap ultrasonic cleaner (probably for the same cost as parts if you found them) that you can use again and again. When reinstalling them, don't forget to dirty them up with a touch of sealant to prevent them from loosening.

LOL, I (and I'm sure many others here) spend a disproportionate amount of time looking for old parts a great deal older than that for my pens - having to use something new is always a last resort!

it's gong to be difficult to get new parts. They will be proprietary Montblanc parts.

The chances of getting new parts that fit into the cap threads from anywhere other than Montblanc is unlikely so cleaning up the originals is going to be your best bet for having a cap that works. Buying other parts and trying them out might earn you a split cap finial and then you will have a bigger problem.

If you prefer to send it to Montblanc for a level 1 service then you won't see it for a while and it will be significantly more costly than cleaning up the parts you have.

If they aren't broke then you're better off not trying to fix them.

    See: https://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread...STON-MECHANISM
