The photography at the BBC link is amazing. But it is like going back at the time of Ansel Adams. Another planet. Another age. Another approach and especially it wasn't a mass hobby, only a limited number of persons could afford it.
With a phone today anybody can become an 'photographer' and social media is killing this art, everybody retouches their snaps without shame. Saturation, hue, colours are managed by apps all you do is aim and shoot. No fantasy anymore. Too bad. I have an old K1000 by Pentax, a digital Canon eos Rebel and a Nikon EM. Always kept at home as to carry around the camera bag is a a hassle. Don't have the drive anymore :-(

I can't disagree with any of what you have said. I will even add that I loathe how photoshop and video editing software has allowed the proliferation of visual fantasies all too common on social media today.

At the same time, I have to wonder if the access to picture-taking mobile phone cameras offer might be the gateway for a new generation of truly great photographers and cinematographers.

After years with an Olympus OM-1, I looked for a pocket camera more suited to outdoor adventures.

The pocket Leica appealed to me, but reviews mentioned that the electronics in the small Leica cameras were from Panasonic. Further checking revealed that the lenses in some pocket Panasonic Lumix cameras were from Leica. And the equivalent Panasonic camera was hundreds of bucks less than the Leica with the same optics.

So I got a Panasonic Lumix and love it. Brilliant, rugged little machine that takes grand photos.

The lens in these were (are) designed, not made, by Leica. I have 2 of them that I'd like to sell at some point (FZ18 & LX7).

Recently I stumbled across the black and white photographs of Vivan Maier. Well worth a look!

So? Suppose he, or someone else, manually printed the pictures. There's a lot of manipulation in that printing process. Cropping, dodging and burning, overall contrast and darkness or lightness to name a few. Selecting the paper makes a big difference. He doesn't get off the hook so easily.

Anyway, what's wrong with manipulating the image?

    Thanks.

I just had a look, and it was well worth it. Her photographic studies are brilliant work, and quite a window into 1950s and '60s big city America.

Don't know about yours. I have a ZS60. On the lens housing it says: Leica. Likewise, in the mfer's description: Leica.

My Lumix TZ20 has the same markings on the lens.

What Popular Photo Magazine said about the Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-50mm f2.8-3.5 lens: "Designed by Leica in Solms, Germany, the Four Thirds mount lens is manufactured at Panasonic’s factory in Yamagata, Japan, in a process quality-controlled by Leica."

Those lenses bearing LEICA name on Lumix cameras are manufactured by Panasonic.

Leica do certify those (source: https://www.panasonic.com/global/con...ification.html).

Manipulation of an image, imo, has to be done while taking the photo by playing with F settings and over/under exposure. You can play with the light while printing a B&W photo. This is what I did when I wanted to enhance something. Although I now shoot digital I never use software to change the look and light of a photograph.
