Default Rotring 'Art Pen' anyone familiar with it?

My Rotring is (I think) an 'Art Pen' -Has the long tapering body. I'm confused about the cartridge setup. It appears to have a 'fixed' cartridge which doesn't come out of the body so it would have to be filled with a syringe or similar. Is this correct?
It writes rather nicely, -has a wide italic knib. Any ideas? Rotring specialists?

I'm only familiar with Art Pens with the straight-sided cap and ribbed section, so this is either an unknown version to me (quite possible) or maybe a bitsa. Does it actually say Rotring on it anywhere?

Anyway, my best distance guess it that it's either a converter or long format cartridge wedged in the barrel. If you can get a decent grip on it you ought to be able to pull it out. Should you have to resort to pliers it'll probably be at the cost of mangling the end and thus losing the converter, if such it is, so check that you have cartridges that will fit the nipple before destroying the present solution. Better a syringe fill and working pen than a cartridge fill with an impossible-to-find format! If it's a Rotring, it should be "international standard", however I've learnt to never assume anything with FPs.

I had a number of Rötring Artpens over the years. They are excellent writers, but mine always had the logo AND a ribbed section. Any writing on the body or clip or nib?

Ps, have you tried gently edging out the cartridge with the use of a small crochet hook? (And am I alone in having problems accessing the forum?)

Yes I'm sure it is an original Rotring, it was owned by my father who would have bought it new and used it for Illustration. It has 'Rotring'... 'Germany' in very small type on the cap.
I've tried gently pulling on the protruding part of what is obviously the cartridge, but it's quite soft and would be easily distorted and destroyed.
I wonder if it was designed to take ink from those rectangular Rotring 'Indian' ink containers with the slim tapered spout. I have a couple somewhere around here, if only I could find 'em!.
Thanks for your input lads. I'll keep on it because it IS a lovely writer. (Even if I'm not! hahah)

These pics (apologies for the rough photography), show the thing. It's a piston ink cartridge, and I think that the end of the piston screw gets stuck in the tapered body, and so it needs to be pulled out with small jeweller's pliers. Strange (but nice) thing really, when you pull the top off it you just sit there wondering what to do with it because it doesn't slip on to the end of the body. This will be a nice writer I think, but it does need running in.

Chances are that this has been on a shelf for 30 years - since my dear ol' dad kicked the bucket. I feel I'd like to pull the knib assembly out to clean it all.

They write well with awesome balance. I have a few special “pen of the year” editions, including one with gold nib.

Ahhh, now I see it capped it jogs a memory that I think was trying to be noticed earlier. A while back there was a set (iirc) of these on da 'Bay that piqued my interest because they were Rotring but different from the usual. However the BIN was a bit higher than my level for instant impulsive purchases, and by the time I'd mulled over it someone else had snapped it up. Heigh ho.

Anyway, glad to find my guess was correct. The piston ink cartridge is what we call a converter, and as you surmise the knob is fouling the interior of the barrel. It's worth checking inside the barrel, just in case there's dirt or old ink that may be causing the thing to be too tight, but otherwise you'll want to either switch to cartridges or find a slimmer-ended converter, because it's really just a matter of time before the mouth is worn or split and you end up with a leak. Can't remember off-hand what models might fit the bill but I daresay another Geek might chime in.

Ah, I see. It's a vintage model. Current ones have that white tip and ridged section. Glad you got it writing.

Oooh Bulkyfiller those are absolutely beautiful!
Thanks grainweevil, now I know the converter is not original, I won't feel guilty about shortening it a touch and tapering it to hopefully help it to fit inside better. And yes I'll clean out the barrel.
I'd like to remove the knib assembly to clean it... how's that done? or is it best left alone? It writes nicely, but does 'starve' now and again, -it would be nice to get it as new.

Naaah none of that worked. The piston adaptor is too loose, it measures 6.31 dia, but it's too loose and just comes out when you unscrew the barrel.

Is the tip of the converter threaded? Hard to tell from the photo.

If it is, I might try various nuts to find a good match for the threads. Which would give more purchase for easing it out.

    In any event, good luck.

Those millennium edition pens are great. I have a few of them, I think I have two left to complete the collection. ArtPen and Lamy Joy are really lovely pens for italic calligraphy, and have instilled in me a love of desk pens - I now have (vintage) two Sheaffers and four Auroras, an Edacoto and a Waterman.

Guess Rot Art pen happily takes Waterman cart.
