Default Difficulty removing Esterbrook transitional section

I recently acquired an Esterbrook J transitional pen. It is in need of sac replacement. I have worked the section loose so it rotates around within the barrel but I cannot remove it. I've tried heating, pulling, tugging and twisting to no avail. When looking down the barrel I can see the sac appears to be a gooey mess. Could this be the reason I cannot remove the section? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Regards,
    NK

Sometimes I have to repeatedly apply heat to the barrel. You have to be careful not to overheat the barrel. Sometimes I overheated a barrel and caused the barrel to burn. Smoke was a clue. I would repeated ly heat the barrel in short applications of heat checking that the barrel isn't getting too hot. Dry heat. Carefully applied. You don't to melt or burn it. I have done both by applying the heat too long.
