Default Vintage cast iron pen holder date?

I bought this on vacation to Colorado and the lady said she did not know what it was and would I give her 10 bucks. I did and would like to know its history. I can not find a maker on it. Should I clean it or paint it?DSC06506.JPGDSC06507.JPGDSC06508.JPGDSC06509.JPG

Mind you, this is ONLY a guess. I think it may be circa 1870 to latish 1880.

I did a picture search and this came up. I noticed the similar pattern in the boarder that looks like a rising sun or something like that. Here is a picture of a simliar ink stand with much the same crane. The suggested date is a good guess, but I have to add that this type of style live on well beyond WWI. You can sort of see the origins of many art deco paterns in the boarder there.

IMHO just clean it thoroughly, then do it again! The age patina it gives it the character, it's great.
Actually I think it might be sometime perhaps in the 3rd decade of the last century. That sort of Art Deco decoration design only started around the 1920s-30's.

Your inkwell reminds me of the one I'm using these days.....but I don't know how old it is. I would guess late 19th century.

My similar German inkwell set (have 30 singles and sets) , missing the glass inserts. I'd guess mine '1890's-1900 and or so. As hard as I try to buy those only with glass inserts, I've got to pile a good third of them into the trunk and drive to the Black Forest and find a glass blower who is more than just for tourists.
