Default Ink Review: Pilot Iroshizuku kiri-same (Autumn Shower)

Today I’m reviewing Pilot Iroshizuku kiri-same ink.

“The name "iroshizuku" is a combination of the Japanese words "iro" (colouring) expressing high standards and variation of colours, and "shizuku" (droplet), which embodies the very image of dripping water. Each ink name derives from the expressions of beautiful Japanese natural landscapes and plants, all of which contribute to the depth of each individual hue. Enjoy Japan's rich and subtle colour aesthetic as you write. Pilot has always manufactured its own inks, which are renowned throughout the world.”

Kiri-same translates from Japanese to Autumn Shower and it is the slightly warmer grey of a rainy shower. It is a light grey ink that almost looks like it has a pinky/beige tinge in some light.

It didn’t suffer from any hard starts or non-starts when I put the uncapped pen down to do swab tests, dry times and water resistance. It started up straight away with no problem even after the pen had been filled for 3 weeks. It always behaved very well.

It dried within 15 seconds on my Clairefontaine Triomphe paper and didn’t smear after it was dry.

Available in attractive Pilot Iroshizuku 50ml or 15ml glass bottles from many outlets worldwide. Thanks to The Writing Desk for my sample.

    • Flow Rate: Very good - quite wet.
    • Lubrication: Very smooth - nicely lubricated.
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: Not saturated
    • Shading Potential: Some shading seen.
    • Bleed-Through: None seen on papers I used.
    • Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: None seen.
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after many days in the pen.
    • Staining (pen): Not seen after several days - easy clean-up.
    • Staining (hands): Washed off of my hands easily.
    • Clogging: Not seen.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof but shows excellent water resistance.

Thanks for the review, Chrissy. I haven't been swayed by greys yet. Though Penwash has made tantalizing sketches

Thank you as ever Chrissy I love greys, and this is one I use regularly - not least because it behaves so very well in almost every pen I've ever shown it to!

You're welcome. I'm not a fan of greys either. This one is pretty though.

I love grays! Kiri-same is a favorite, but I also have Silver Fox, and find it fascinating that it looks almost green in comparison. Thanks for the review, Chrissy!
My other pen is a Montblanc.

And my other blog is a tumblr!

    My eBooks. Because why not.

Thank you for giving this ink your review.

I like this ink, but I guess you know that by now

Once we are done with October, I want to use it for washes more.

You're welcome. I quite like it too but not sure if I like it as much as a 50ml bottle worth here in the UK. These inks are expensive here so I don't often buy them. Maybe a 15ml bottle would suit my purpose more but here we can only buy them in sets of 3.

I really don't understand what Pilot is thinking with us having to buy 3 of the smaller bottles at once. I have a few 15ml Iroshizuku bottles from before they only came in 3 packs. I love the ink, but I would never have committed to a 50ml bottle.

I really don't understand it either but there we are. If I ever see one for sale I might buy it but otherwise I will have to do without this one.

You're welcome. Hopefully you can get it at a more reasonable price within the US.
