Default Giving a happy end(ing) to a Cavalier

This particular Cavalier (made circa 1930s if not earlier) is quite atypical.

First of all, it's gorgeous, I can't remember seeing another Cavalier in this almost unused condition.
Second, it's made out of woodgrain ebonite, usually some celluloid with tacky patterns.
Thirdly, it's girthy, usually Cavalier pens are slimmer than this bad boy.

When I got it, it's a pen-pencil combo, but the pencil part is just ... odd, and not matching at all, as though they ran out of material and made the pencil part from another. On top of it, it's damaged from what looks like a previous attempt to repair it.

So, I took the pencil part off, and made a new end for this pen. Inspired by the styling of legendary Pelikan 100, I made the end from black ebonite, which matches the black top finial on the cap.

By the way, this is also why a pen restorer like me have a small metal lathe. Because it's super handy when you have to make an impromptu part like this. The tricky part is to make the end look the part, it has to be nice and polished, but it can't be too shiny because it's supposed to look old, just like the rest of the pen.

    Nicely done.

There's a Cavaliers and Roundheads pun in here somewhere (flat bottom, round head ...) but I'll spare you.

The original nib that came with the pen is just a typical cheap steel nib, and the section is messed up as well.

So I have to find the replacements. For now, I just install a Sheaffer Lifetime so I can test the pen. We'll see if that nib will stay with this pen.

I wish I have an unlimited supply of 14K Sheaffer nibs, they are just so good.

Well done. That will be a fun pen when you are finished.

Continuing to take the pen through its paces, a sketch today:

It's good to be back at the usual pace after the daily "pressure" of October sketches.
The Sheaffer 14K nib seems to be settling in nicely. The big girth of the pen makes writing/sketching super comfortable and nice.

Also today, I am also experimenting with some washes with the warm grey Iroshizuku Kiri-same, together with the ink in the pen which is PenBBS #236.

Nice sketch. A junkshop raiding pal sent me a derelict Cavalier, a Parker knockoff I reckon, which I decided to restore.

Not a bad pen, despite the ink stains.

Looks like another "fat" Cavalier like mine above.
These are not bad pens at all. And they are not that common.

Went to an estate sale (first this year, with the pandemic) I found an -- equally stocky -- tool as the Cavalier.
I just had to sketch it.

I love the engraving on the head that tells us who made the tool and where, just like on some vintage pen barrel.

The wrench probably is the same age or older than the pen
