Coulda used a final edit though.
Agree on the final edit. On first read, the thing that struck me was how little I knew about Jones. I had seen the "made for TV" documentary, and just wrote him off as any other cult leader. I didn't know the majority of his congregation was black. The political connections were definitely new information, and the author does note that this was supressed by the media (I don't assign that to party in this case, other than circumstance. They all do it).
The parallels with modern politics is striking. Sure there are the race-baiters who make a living off of it. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, etc... I'm happy to throw race out of the equation and just consider them amongst the other sheisters in the world, whether it's a Bernie Madoff or (pick your favorite televangelist). They do a disservice to the noble idealists. The MLK's and Malcolm X. In more global terms the Gandhi, Massood's, Old-school Luther and his theses, etc...
Politicians pander to their constituents. Democrats have courted black votes since LBJ got them to vote for the next two centuries.
The author may have a point, however unpleasant for a Democrat to acknowledge (because we want truth, right?). Pick the major "city in decline". Those cities are the direct result of decades of Democrat "rule". The people who couldn't afford to leave were minorities. Ironically, most of them now run the cities (and honestly have for some time). Baltimore? DC? That's just two from one spot on the East coast. I haven't even spread out the first arbitrary radius.
Perhaps the African American should beware the white liberal's offer to "help". Malcolm X certainly warned them.
