Default Ink Review: New Cult Pens Iridescink Helen (Made by Diamine Inks)

Cult Pens Iridescink Helen is one of the three latest new iridescent sheening inks that are exclusively made for Cult Pens by Diamine Inks. Cult Pens describe their Iridescinks as being a bit different and a bit more unusual because they are made to sheen.

Helen is a well saturated, dark forest green ink that has some attractive contrasting red sheen. It is a pine tree type of dark green that leans slightly more towards the blue range of the colour spectrum.

Helen flowed very well with all of the pens I tried it in, didn’t feel dry, and it’s lubrication was quite smooth across the page. It dried fairly quickly on most of the papers I wrote on and didn’t smear after it was dry. It took a couple of washes to remove it from my fingers.

My Lamy pen always started up immediately when filled with Helen, even after I put it down, uncapped, while I did swab tests and comparisons with other inks.

In order to see the most red sheen, it’s better to write with pens that lay down plenty of ink, and use smooth, non-absorbent paper. Helen might bleed through a bit on cheaper papers.

Available in 80ml bottles from Cult Pens web-site. Thank you Cult Pens for my sample.

    • Flow Rate: Very good - not dry.
    • Lubrication: Good - quite smooth across the page.
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: A saturated ink.
    • Shading Potential: Some shading seen.
    • Sheen: Some seen on smooth papers.
    • Show-Through: Some seen on the papers I used.
    • Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Seen on Royal Recycled paper.
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after several days in the pen.
    • Staining (pen): Not seen after several days - easy clean-up.
    • Staining (hands): Took two washes to remove from my hands.
    • Clogging: Not seen.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof, but shows some water resistance.

Thanks Chrissy, for another excellent review. Do you know what is the rational behind the naming of this series?

You're welcome. I believe they are named after people at Cult Pens.

Since posting this review Cult Pens has also issued this ink in plastic 30ml bottles. It's called "Little Hels" as a 30ml bottle that usually costs £3.99.
However all Diamine inks including Cult Pens inks are currently on offer for 10% discount in the Cult Pens Winter Sale.
