Actually I don't mind some of those outlandish pens.
For example this, I wouldn't mind having one, if the price is not where this thing is shooting at.
As a former CW reenactor in an artillery company, that wouldn't be too bad to have ... tho I suspect low retail is far higher than what I am worth.🤓

    EDITED TO ADD:
Ugly and/or Garish pens do have a couple advantages:
    1) They are less likely to be stolen/ kept if loaned to someone.

    2) Easy to tell if it's your's if/when it does go AWOL.

    Other advantages:

    1. You can tell them apart.

    2. Your family can tell them apart.

    3. No one can complain "You already have one exactly like that..."

I use my pens and these sorts of pens aren't practical. They are more things for show than they are useful. If a pen isn't useful then I don't want it.

Actually it doesn't have to do with a nuclear arsenal. This is a 1961 Soviet era desk set dedicated to the launch of "Venera-1 " (occasionally known as "Sputnik 8") on February, 12 1961. It was the first spacecraft to fly past Venus, as part of the Soviet Union's Venera program.

    Excellent reply 👍🏻. Thanks .
And I'd definitely like to add , the post might have sounded like it was aimed at 'those nasty Russians' when that certainly wasn't my intent.

There's no doubt that the Sputnik program was an early contribution to the arguably wonderful world of communication we enjoy now, and the continuing exploration of our corner of this system is quite useful in contextualising our existence.
It's a bit of a shame we can't get our priorities more in order on this planet , either before launching out , or at least at the same time !
And , as has seemingly always been, progressive tech usually comes with its nasty underbelly, all we can do is try to further the positive...and stay awake .

I actually like the Chaos Pen. It's a hundred percent what it set out to be. Not something I'd want to write with, but I have a soft spot in my heart for it.

On the other hand the recent Sailor wabi-sabi issue? Oh dear, oh dear. It's not wabi-sabi and it looks dreadful.

Every time I see a picture of the Wabi Sabi, I think to myself "This is why we don't let sticky-fingered children handle our nice pens."

Whenever I see a product like this, the first thought that comes to mind is that the company found that a lot of products failed quality control and they asked their marketing department instead of their engineers how to fix the issue.

    Or maybe something like this:

While I don't personally like the Chaos pen, I can see a certain appeal and design aesthetic in it. Over and above the appearance of the pen, and probably the greater reason for not liking it is that it is at least authorized by Sylvester Stallone. I don't like Stallone the actor or Stallone the celebrity, not that I've ever met the man.

As far as the design aesthetic, I don't particularly care for pens like that, because I like more...pen-ny pens. I'm not so excited about roughly cylindrical things that have ink in them, no matter how much workmanship goes into them. I want my pen-ny pens to feel smooth and pen-ny. On the other hand, who am I to talk? If Jean-Pierre Lepine's "Free Ride" pen were available as a fountain pen, I would want-want-waaaaaant it.

    Picture of said pen:

Ahh, memories of Mad magazine. I know I'm not the usual demographic, because I'm not a preteen/teen boy, but this 62 year old lady still likes Mad magazine. I liked it when I was 10 or 11, and when I was 15, and 25, and...you get the idea.

I loved that magazine, and then I discovered National Lampoon. And now I live on Madison St., which, like the folk from MAD, I spell as "MADison" whenever I have to write my address. It's a pity that well-appointed news stands are a thing of the past. I remember spending a lot of time just browsing all kinds of obscure magazines.

Possibly the best-selling pen of all time, I would say it epitomizes the worst possible taste:
