Default Lock nut stuck on this Gold Bond branded Wahl Eversharp Doric

    Hello all,

I've recently joined, just lurking and appreciating the fountain pens on this forum.

The problem in this repair of this Wahl-Eversharp Doric, branded as Gold Bond, is that the lock nut is stuck near at the end of this threaded portion of the rod. The nut was hacked a bit because I couldn't get a good grip with my needle nose pliers, so I'm sorry for that. I was trying to use petroleum jelly to lubricate the area, but the lock nut is still stuck on the rod. I've thought about using some WD-40 on the area as well as using a vise grip on the nut, but it's important to exercise caution so I haven't continued the repair.

Do you all have an idea what I should do next? I've attached a photo, hopefully you all can see it well.

I'd use a mechanics's nut splitter to avoid having to grip and potentially damage the rod. I've never used a splitter on such a small nut, but I can't see why not.

I'd go with that, too, or possible a Dremel with a thin cutting disc, cutting almost all the way through the side of the nut and then splitting it. If the nut is misthreaded or otherwise damaged, forcing it to unscrew might damage the threads on the rod.

I would go with what Jon says. Then go to a hardware store and find a fitting nut.

I wholeheartedly agree with FredRydr and Jon Szanto. The nut is a very cheap and easy to find replacement so you can afford to cut it off. The same cannot be said for the rod so you need to protect the thread on that as well as protecting the rod itself.

And will the rod's threads need to be chased?

After that much monkeying around, I would do it just as a matter of course, before attempting to thread on a new nut. Are these a common/standard tread size/spacing?

Worse case scenario... steal parts from a Parker Duofold and make it a button filler.

:P Not sure how you guys feel about that though.
