    Default Your 2021 "Great Catches"

It's the end of the year, time to look back.

This thread is to showcase your COTY (there's another made-up acronym for ya, Fred ).

For me, pen purchase-wise, this year is an interesting one. I have several pens that I would put in the of Catch(es) of The Year category.

One of them is this Morrison set.

It is far from being an expensive or outlandish purchase, which makes it an even more interesting catch, to me.

See, getting a set with the price tag intact (also came with the guarantee sheet, also intact), in this nicely preserved condition, is already a treat.

But this fountain pen is the higher-end version of one that I already owned for years, which is a Roxy (made by Morrison, of course).

The thing is, I wasn't expecting to see this version, ever.

That gold nib on the pen shows that Morrison knew how to make an excellent one.

    Let's see yours...

A COTY would be the best sumgai find since January 1st, right? Alas, I have none this year that rises to that level.

My best catches of this year were represented by two members of this forum who helped me acquire a couple of pens that I was having difficulty finding. That assistance was worth more to me than the pens.

My wife's great catch, Francis's gutting and scaling of it.
My wife talked some good advice to a guy in a street flea market and asked him if he had any fountain pens or ink wells in his house behind his table. He went in and came out with something that was broken in he couldn't get the nib out. Wife said, "husband can use it for spare parts", and he gave it to her...for free.
I learned after making my self rather dumb at a live auction, how to screw a nib up out of the depths of a 1930's Fendomatic, made in Milain, Safety Pen.... Re-Corked and Repaired by Francis also. So I knew how a Safety pen worked, and it did. But anything from before 1924 will need a new cork.
It had a #6 Simplo weak kneed wet noodle nib.

Francis said polishing the pen was lots of hard work. He didn't have a large snowflake, I find the small one just fine.
What a nib!!!! The white spike on the stick was the original top.

The pen is so finally polished.

Now to find some sort of slip on clip for my gold smith to make out of silver.

Not necessarily sumgai. Just a pen that you acquire this year that is special to you.

Sometimes a "sumgai" pen becomes just a pen once the "sumgai" novelty wears off.

But the Morrison set above, which is not a "sumgai" by any stretch of imagination, will be treasured by me always because the reason I like it goes beyond the acquisition itself.

We did find a Skyline at a yard sale...after years of asking, 'Ya got any fountain pens?' Someone finally did.
My other pen is a Montblanc.

Didn't bother looking til around Thanksgiving. But when I did, I wasn't expecting to just randomly find an oversized marine pearled Sheaffer Balance that mainly just needed a cleaning and a new sac especially for 40

Awesome participation, a good reminder that COTY doesn't always mean buying an expensive pen, or even the pen itself.

    Keep it coming!

Like every other year there have been so many pens that would qualify as a COTY, many colourful or unusual. This one is just a black chased hard rubber pen but the quality is so outstanding that it must be this Swan SF1 for me. Box and pen could be brand new though within a few months of a century old.

Finding a Parker 51 for five euros was probably my best catch this year.

I also got a Pelikan m600 violet, to match my pink one, from another collector at a very good price, so I'm very pleased with that.

It's been an interesting pen year, and a couple that I really had looked for came my way. I may even likely be forgetting something that came in the last year (and not before). But for surprise and smile-inducement, this unusual set that I found in the early part of the year does take the cake. They were owned by one family, and the Sheaffer OS Balance is paired not just with two pencils, but a matching penknife in the black-and-pearl celluloid. Not a Sheaffer product but made by a small company in Chicago, it makes for a fun pairing.
