Default Montblanc 145 Replacement Nib ... suspicious?

    Hey all,

After being over-zealous in smoothing the nib on my Montblanc 145, I decided to order a replacement nib off of Etsy.

It arrived, and looks different from the original... what do you think? (the original nib has ink stains on it)

I would like to see a picture showing the feeds before I commit to a definite decision but at the moment I'm not 100% convinced about either of them. Looking at the last two pictures I think I slightly prefer the nib on the right looking at the screen.

If a magnet sticks, it's fake. If not, it's a maybe.

Agreed. I would be testing both of these with a magnet.

If we could also see the pen's original cap & clip that might be helpful too.

The replacement nib stuck to a magnet. I guess that answers my question.

Yes afraid so. For me that nib looked quite long and the gold masking was poor. By comparison your original looks quite lightly engraved but I suspect this could potentially have happened while you were smoothing it. The brass threads on your one look much better.

It's a shame that you might have over smoothed it but hopefully you will be able to get an authentic replacement. Good luck.

My original nib doesn't pick up a magnet -- it was new and unused in its box from the early 1990's (I believe it was originally purchased in Korea or Japan), so I don't have much reason to suspect it. My smoothing efforts were only to the tip, not the body of the nib...

The Etsy vendor has issued me a full refund with return, no questions asked. I think this experience has made me too wary of purchasing replacement parts online again, sight unseen. I think I may either pony up for a Montblanc replacement, or take it to a nib tech to regrind it. It's very smooth but very wet, often filling the loops when I write 'o' or 'e' etc.

    Thanks for the replies.

IMHO, that is the wisest choice, since you will get exactly what you want. Buying a new Montblanc replacement part for too much money will be as it comes from the factory, and then you'll be seeking a nibmeister anyway.

Good that you get/got your money back.

This “no questions asked” almost seem that this guy intentionally sell fake parts and even if 4 out of 5 return the part it’s still awesome lucrative business.
This return policy ensures that the scammed people (and imo there is no other word for that if he sell it as “Montblanc” part) usually do not make too much troubles and do not disturb future fake business.
