Default Parker Parts By Ariel Kullock: Going Up?

I was looking today at the Parker 51 and 45 pens I have with barrels and hoods, and a few caps, made by Ariel Kullock, and wondering if they were worth anything. I liked them because of the non-standard colors, and so I assembled them around by the working parts of pens I bought. I was a bit surprised by the prices I saw on ebay. I also saw that some of his work was so fancy and beautiful that the stuff I have is pedestrian indeed. So, what do you think of Arial's work? I have always liked even the simpler stuff, like the swirly purple P45 shell and barrel I put around P45 guts.

I enjoy the custom Parkers. Not so much the caps - I admire them, as they're terrific craftwork, but they are just a bit too much for me (I mean in style, not price).

You used to be able to get the P51 shells quite cheaply on ebay. Now, they seem to be quoted around the $300 mark. I have a feeling fountain pens on ebay are in the final frenetic stages of a speculative bull market - if I saw this happening in stocks, I would be quietly selling down my positions. :-)

Kullock Parkers are scarce now on ebay.

Around 2019 I don't recall searching for P45's without finding a bunch of his creations, but that's not the case anymore. I remember buying 2 or 3 of his dimpled 45's for around $30 each.

Parkers, in general, have gone up on ebay, with 75's selling for $100+, 45's in the $50's, and 180's in the $100's. Interestingly, the 95's and 88's haven't gone up, probably because they're rather bland, albeit good writers. In the case of the 88, this is probably due to the fact that it's really a souped-up Vector, for which most collectors don't really care.

It is my impression that he his not doing so much of the Parker bespoke parts these days, so it makes sense that the resale/aftermarket prices would rise: that is what happens with scarcity. As to the aesthetics, that is completely up to the individual, and it doesn't matter much how I feel about them. I've got one 51 with a barrel/hood in interesting acrylic but beyond that never invested. There are pure collectors who don't go near the stuff, and people who make it a point to collect Kullock/Parker. To each their own, certainly in this case.

When I decided I wanted to try a Parker 51 I was less than interested in the dull colors I found for sale & was very happy to discover the Kullock parts which would make me happy to pick up a Parker 51 pen. I have orange, yellow, demonstrator, mustard & a pearly sort of white one that I enjoy because of the non standard bodies. The only other Parker 51's that I like are a forest green with a hammered sterling cap & a gold filled flighter. I don't remember paying more than $50 for any of these bodies & I was able to transform pens I wouldn't have "reached for" by adding them.

It is the same with my choice of caps: I have mixed & matched gold filled caps from vacumatics to make my pens more desirable to me. If price was not so much I would have loved to purchase some of Mr. Kullock's fantasy caps but I have chosen instead to spend the additional money for nibs more desirable than the normal fines & mediums more easily found. It is obvious that I am NOT a "collector" & don't care one bit that I have created Franken pens by using the Kullock parts; I chose to thank Mr. Kullock for making them so that I would enjoy the Parker 51 fountain pens that I have.

I am not sure that even with the added cost of Kullock parts & pens purchased merely for their preferred caps that I have spent as much money as the newly released Parker 51 pens & @ least my pen's nibs & innards are original Parker 51s!

I first bought parts he offered in standard to replace damaged parts on pens I collected, Then I found his nonstandard parts, hoods and barrels in bright colors. I bought a few, and a few caps, hammered or with an interesting design like "Kama Sutra." Pretty things, stuff I like to look at from time to time.

I always thought Ariel Kullock was very talented and innovative.

Have a few of his pens, made up using his P51 shells.

Attached a few of of them - images

Ariel Kullock also made a number of P51 coloured cap jewels, most of which I thought were attractive and enhanced the caps

On the subject of Fantasy P51 pens…………

    There are other makers……..

Their build quality is in a vastly different league

    Torelli et al

Never wished to pay the prices asked but they are beautiful pens.............my horses can only carry two large bags of gold....for these pens it is not enough.......

Hopefully price and quality are directly proportional.

Wow Proteus, those P51's are amazing. The depth and vivid colour of that second one!

I have a couple of Bexley made custom 51s in swirly ebonite. Have to find one out and take a picture of it for this thread which seems to have turned into a custom 51 thread :-)

I like the Kullock demonstrators, too. Okay, an aero demo is nothing much, but it's such fund watching a Vacumatic do its stuff!

As for my reply to the original question asked by pajaro.

Spent some time considering my reply ( some research made on this ).

It appears to me that the prices asked have not increased at all, if anything they are a poor investment at present.

' Hopefully price and quality are directly proportional. '

    In answer to your question.

    The build quality/finish is outstanding.

    As for the price.

    Would anyone here pay £800 - £1000+ for a Torelli P51?

A really nice set of AK shells using NOS P51 parts is worth about £200

    Just some thoughts…………

As an aside and totally off topic…..

A few years back I missed something very special - P61C Boucheron in 18CT multi coloured basketweave – 12 made

The LS ( nib section ) was shagged ( an english term for defective ) …….but I had 4 NOS P61C complete nib sections with unused feeds

Only bid upto £1450, it sold for £1645

    Still kicking myself………..today’s value £3500+

    A chance missed……….will never see another again…………..

    There were also P51's made

..............also passed on DS's P51 Rainbow prototype at £525...........

I wouldn't. That parker 61 is outstanding nonetheless! probably feels like a trillion bucks, but it's okay. Life goes on and such
