A trick I've been using is to key the unknown letters with X. For example, row 2 above could be SXXXP or SXXXL. Next step might be SLXXP or SPXXL. (Don't hit ENTER.) Combined with the keyboard clues, it's a way to visualize the target word.

To work with UK spelling, it would likely need to be six letters per line.
Got skunked again yesterday. On line six I guessed vapor but it was favor.

Four guesses seems to be my sweet spot: got 1 in 3, 5 in 4, and 1 in 5 guesses. Haven't been stumped yet but at least one puzzle I walked away from and came back later.

The only thing that saved me was that there was only one word I could form with the letters that were left. It took about an hour to think of it.

It's an interesting puzzle, a kind of variant of hangman I suppose. While I've had a bit of fun with it the lucky guess part of it, usually at the beginning, detracts for me. I also stumble with American spellings of course because my brain wants to spell things theproperBritish way!

Saw a write-up in The Guardian on another word game: Absurdle.
It's a take-off with the target word re-shuffled according to your guesses (unlimited), i.e. the software is your opponent.
My first go took 8 rows to get a winner.

hmmm - so I tried your new word game, Wordle, for the first time today.
Perhaps today's puzzle was easy, but I was able to get it 4 tries. Or perhaps it is just beginner's luck. We shall see about tomorrow's puzzle.
