    Default Fun, Free Word Puzzle

Being a fan of word games (the NY Times Spelling Bee and crossword every morning with my first coffee) I was glad to find a new word puzzle.

Wordle starts with a blank 5 x 6 grid and a keyboard. You fill in letters one row at a time, trying to get a certain word.

It helps to know the frequency of occurrence for letters in English: ETAOIN SHRDLU. Linotype machines had these letters in two rows of 6, in their approximate order of frequency in the English language. Typesetters would test their machines by running their fingers down the rows, or use the letters to indicate an error in the typesetting, and occasionally would forget to remove them from the finished piece.

It also helps to know the common arrangements (th, qu, ing, ed, ea, etc.)

A fresh puzzle posts every day.

I wondered where the letter popularity order came and found this interesting page
    https://www.lexico.com/explore/which...-are-used-most
I wonder if that sequence would apply to modern writing as it's over 150 years old. Also, I found the other sequence interesting.

Here's a table based on present usage. An analysis based on letter frequencies in international publications (e.g The Guardian) which include quite a few non-English words would be somewhat different.

20 minutes and all the guesses. I didn't know they sometimes use repeat letters. Tricky buggers....

I usually go four rows with an occasional three. A few days ago I got skunked. On the fifth row I guessed sieve. The word was siege.

I came across Wordle just last night. Very smart to have one a day so you don't binge away hours. I would note that the puzzle is up for exactly 24 hours so the previous post, Chip, is a total spoiler if someone wanted to play today. Maybe just show past examples?

I hadn't thought about the timezone thing. With the ".uk" in the link GMT might be a consideration. Anyway, just wanted to mention. I happened to catch the game last night around 11:30 PST and when I finished, it said a new game was coming in 30 minutes, with a countdown timer. Maybe it is time-zone corrected? So I played two games in a row about 1/2 hour apart, but have to wait for next one.

ETA: logging into Wordle shows the countdown to midnight for new game is linked to my time zone, not sure if that is global or what. I'm in PST.

I'm in Atlantic Standard Time, and its countdown is to my local midnight. I guess that answers the question.

Same here. So, to avoid posting a spoiler, one should wait the time shown on the puzzle plus how many hours?

I find time zones perplexing. When we lived in New Zealand we had to calculate the best times to make calls to the US, Ireland, etc., most often after midnight. Ugh!
