I finally discovered the knife was a hunting knife. Perhaps a "Bowie" type?? Anyway, his religious motivation, whatever that now means, while carrying a hunting knife would say to me he had intent to obstruct, or he wasn't there in a neutral or to aid in making sure the proceedings occurred. Could the judge have just decided to be merciful toward a radicalized defendant? Odd ruling.

She said that the gov provided no evidence of intent to obstruct. He was convicted on other charges, including the weapons charge. This appears to have been a weaker case on intent and obstruction.

"Mr. Trump did not appear out of a vacuum to upend democracy. His presidency was the culmination of years of political degradation during which voters watched our political institutions rust to the point of breaking. Like any good liar, Mr. Trump succeeded by building his lies off a truth; people no longer trust the federal government because they see its corroded institutions as corrupted for the few against the many. Until we fix that problem, we will not free ourselves from the threat of future political violence and upheaval worse than Jan. 6."

    By James Sasso

Mr. Sasso served as senior investigative counsel for the Jan. 6 committee and worked on drafting its final report.

Sure. In the meantime, jail these junkheads and go after Trump too.

I think you missed his point. Putting people in jail is only a short term fix. Until political degradation is addressed, more Jan 6’s will occur.

I didn't miss his point. I made a separate one: jail the yahoos who committed the crimes. The courts don't need to address the cultural issues. Other people can work on that.

Doesn't sound like this judge has enough control over the lawyers:

I think, perhaps, Mr. Pence has decided that Trump is no longer someone for which he must continue to submit. There is a lesson for all of us here.
