Sorry to hear of your mother's death, and also your back injury and pain. It's tough when everything you do (walking, coughing, sneezing) hurts like hell.

My back got wrecked when a packhorse I was leading fell off a steep trail and I didn't let go of the rope in time. I managed to ride out, ten miles to the line shack, unsaddle the horses, and then crawl into bed. Next morning I could hardly move. But I had to drive 50 miles to the nearest town over bad, rocky roads. Didn't even have aspirin. Ugh!

When I tried to get workman's comp to pay for meds and therapy, the Forest Service denied my claim, saying that I couldn't prove my injury took place on the job. I couldn't work, nor afford treatment. But given time it healed, somewhat. I've managed for the last many years with caution and daily exercise. I've also done lots of wilderness hiking and skiing, mountain biking, small boat sailing, whitewater boating, and other fun things.

Right now, what I dread most is running the snowblower.

Sorry to hear, EOC. May the trajectory of your recovery continue toward greater mobility and less pain.

    I believe in jinxes, so I won't say anything about 2022 v 2021...

My condolences to you EoC on the loss of your mother. It is especially hard when you are not able to be there. I am glad that you are on the way to recovery in regards to your back. It's horrid when you expect spasms of pain every time you attempt to move, cough, or sneeze.

On the bright side, you can always reconsider that the New Year has not started until 01 February ( Lunar New Year! )

Gung Hay Fat Choy to you and your wife.

    All the Best.

@chrissy - where was the spam? where were links to products or whatever? All I saw was two new members offering condolences for a difficult event in my life - something I note you were beneath doing. Perhaps you should practice what you harp on about so often and stop interfering.

@dneal - pretty low class to offer condolences and then withdraw them. Not entirely unexpected given your track record.

For others: I welcome and have appreciated sincere thoughts and well-wishes here. It has been an exceptionally difficult time in our family for a number of reasons, and it is still not resolved.

For those in the 'I hate EoC' club (FredRydr, Jon Szanto, dneal, eachan, bunnspecial, chrissy et al). Keep your toxic thoughts to yourself.

I hadn't seen this thread before. Now, the first ( explanatory) post is gone, so I'm basing this on the second post.
I'm so sorry for you and your family's loss. I lost my dad 3 years ago (it feels far more recent) and my family's still feeling the emotional repercussions. I recently read this quite which touched me

M: I came here for a good argument.
A: No you didn't; no, you came here for an argument.
M: An argument isn't just contradiction.
    A: It can be.
M: No it can't. An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
    A: No it isn't.
M: Yes it is! It's not just contradiction.
A: Look, if I argue with you, I must take up a contrary position.
M: Yes, but that's not just saying 'No it isn't.'
    A: Yes it is!
    M: No it isn't!

Terrible things can happen to people. The measure of others in such situations is how well they can put aside their personal grudges and offer any kind of support. The response on this forum has been a bit shameful quite frankly. In the reversed position I will always reach out in circumstances of extreme duress irrespective of what I think of the person. I guess it's a reflection of the quality of our upbringing.

That wasn't a tragic event, it was just a moral conundrum. I appreciated your input on that matter. I would have appreciated it more here.
