Before you read the many answers and videos you will receive to your question it would be useful to know the following: why is it you feel the need to remove the piston knob?

Exactly. If you want to grease the piston, you do it from the other end by unscrewing the nib unit.

As a general rule, you shouldn't need to. However, if you really do, it requires a tool of the correct size.

This video is for an M1000, but it's the same for an M800.

You only do it that way when you can't get the piston out without serious risk of damage to the pen. A Pelikan M400 is a good example, because you have to drive the mechanism out. You're also only passively greasing the piston, at best.

When you can remove it pretty easily (i.e.: in a Pelikan M800), you can grease appropriate portion of the piston directly, and the shaft while you're at it.
