    Default Sheaffer's PFM III

    Goos day to all,
I have a question on the PFM III
I have seen them only with gold cap bands and gold nibs.
Some Australian PFMs seem to have gold cap band and PdAG nibs
Lambrou, not God on earth, says that they had gold bands and gold nibs only.
I've been told that there are some out there with 'silver' band and PdAg nibs.
Which is it really? Who can shed some light on this matter please?
    Thank you
    Marco

Can't speak to Australian production, but the US PFM III was a gold nibbed, gold-fill trimmed and White dot pen, with no filler knob "jewel". Australia may well have sold PFM IIIs the way you describe, but it seems unlikely. The issue is the White dot going with the Gold nib, and the non-white dot pairing with the PdAg nib units. Is there a white metal trimmed PFM with a white dot... the would be smoking gun? I would say no. It would not have made sense, based on Sheaffers model heirarchy. White trim, PdAg nib equals PFM I. PdAg nib with gold trim or Gold nib with white trim equals an arranged marriage.

Found a black American PFM III gold band, gold nib and clip :-)
It will be on its way as soon as our Eunice wind storm ends here in UK

the pen has arrived. Medium nib. It is a very nice pen, very smooth nib but it isn't as big as I thought it was from looking at the period commercials or books. This said it very light and writes very smoothly on Rhodia paper. Chunky pen I have to say. Cheers

    Hi Marco,

FYI, if you look at the PFM reference page on the great Sheaffer reference site, SheafferTarga, you'll see that the pens with the PdAg nibs and metal caps were likely PFM II models.

Meanwhile, enjoy your PFM III. These are very comfortable pens and great writers.

Stumbled on this photo on Pete Kirby's website of an Australian PFM III. Note the filler knob:

That's a PFMV. Gold cap, gold nib, gold thing on the tail end.

    Cheers,

Except that it's Australian. Canadian pens and Australian pens can be, well, weird. It could be misnamed on the page it's listed on, but I leave plenty of room for weird.

    Hi all,

Nowhere on a PFM does it state the model number. If all the specs fit a V, why would we think it's not a V?

OK, so FRED had it wrong in his post.

I still see weird pens i.e. non-standard pens with non-standard parts that were made in Canada and Australia, so nothing surprises me.

Yes, you are absolutely right there, Ron. I tend to go Canadian if I can, just because I live there, and the rules do not apply!

W.A. Sheaffer Pen Co. (Aust) Pty Ltd produced the PFM II, III and V models from mid-1961. I have not seen any indication that they distributed any non-standard versions. Aust PFM with gold cap band and Palladium nib is most likely a frankenPFM (mixed parts).
