Default J Herbin Éclat de Saphir and Pelikan Edelstein Sapphire

Looking for a brilliant blue ink, I've tried these in the past. Filled a couple of pens that arrived back from repairs.

Éclat de Saphir may be too wet for that stock Italic Broad nib.

Will see how the Edelstein does next time I fill that pen.

And it might be time to try Iroshizuku Asa-Gao and Diamine Sapphire Blue.

    Thoughts, anyone? Thank you.

Well, you could try Scribe Indigo - it's moderately wet, not watery like Eclat d'Saphir, but more lubricated than Asa Gao. Another great blue is Sailor Manyo Konagi, although less blurple. Enjoy those fine pens! I have several MB's but no birds yet. someday . . .

You mentioned asa-gao as a possibility, and I highly recommend it (probably my most frequently used ink these past several years). Also, Diamine Blue Velvet may be a possibility - - very similar to asa-ago in color and also behaves well.

All of those mentioned are good blues, some brighter than others. Here are some bright blue swabs that I've assembled. Diamine Thunderbolt is from the 2021 Inkvent Calendar and hasn't been released in the Red Edition bottles yet.

I also have Scribe Indigo and reviewed it here

If you want an eye searing blue, you can go for Baystate blue. I've had it in a couple of pens But it's a high maintenance ink and needs to be married forever to the lucky pen ideally. And the pen needs to have a tight seal. I have had it in a couple of cheap pens with no problem.
Otherwise Diamine Sapphire is a delightful blue as you will see.

I would rather cut off my right hand before I filled any of Bob's pens: a Montblanc 146 or a couple of Pelikan M800's with Noodler's Baystate Blue. I quite like clear ink windows in my good quality piston fillers.....
I'm sure Bob knows better than to try Baystate blue in these pens.

I'm afraid I'm confused about your use of "brilliant". Herbin Eclat de Saphir can be a little watery/washed out, while Edelstein Sapphire is more vibrant - really a difference in saturation - which then leads to the issue of how wet the nib is adjusted. Those two inks are also a Royal Blue with a hint of purple (particularly when wet, but dry to a more blue leaning color).

I think of "brilliant" blue as more of the shades in Chrissy's list. Baystate Blue certainly epitomizes the notion, but the staining problem is well known. Of Chrissy's list, I would recommend:

Diamine Blue Velvet (as close as I've found to Penman Sapphire)
    Visconti Blue
    Pilot/Iroshizuku Asa Gao

All three are an intense, vibrant and "brilliant" blue. Blue Velvet perhaps has the best shading, and all three will trend to a darker blue the wetter the pen.

Thanks Yazeh, I love Baystate Blue, and it's tough to find an ink as brilliant as that.

As you say, it is high maintenance. It took a toll on some pens in the past, so BSB is limited to only two pens now. Not using it in the repaired pens.

Thank you for giving me so many options, Chrissy.

Based on your recommendation, I just ordered a bottle of Scribe Indigo. Further research revealed a Reddit post saying S.I. was formulated by the same gentleman who formulated the Parker Penman Sapphire (which alas is no longer made)

Going to try Diamine Blue Velvet. Brings to mind the Bobby Vinton song from my younger days.

Good to know I'm not alone.
There's of course, Akkerman Shocking blue.
Lamy Azurite, which I saw a review recently on the "other side" , but it's a true blurple.
And I believe some of the Private Reserve DC Electric/ American blues
Pennonia has also a couple of bright blues.

Absolutely it is. I agree In fact although I never thought about it before I wonder if one of the Dutch Masters might be Shocking Blue?

Bob, I think you will be happy with Scribe Indigo. It has become one of my favorite blues. And as the proud owner of almost 100 blue inks (its my favorite color), that is a high recommendation.

While some of Noodler's are excellent, any of the Baystate's are difficult inks, My first encounter left a blue smudge on my hands that lasted a long, long, long time. But, I did have good luck with Liberty's Elysium (through Goulet Pens).

While there are many - especially now - very saturated, high sheening blues out there, including Akkerman Shocking Blue, Taccia AO Blue and many others - I prefer less saturated, more shading inks. The character I look for most in any ink is color of course, then shading, then wetness. Permanence is not a big concern of mine at this time.
