Mummies From Outer Space? Mexico’s Congress Gets a Firsthand Look.

A self-proclaimed ufologist showed members of Congress what he claimed were two mummified specimens of extraterrestrial beings. Experts scoffed.

    Simon Romero
    Sept. 13, 2023

Mexico’s Congress is usually meant to be a venue for solemn presentations on budgets and other serious legislation. But this week, lawmakers heard testimony from a self-proclaimed U.F.O. researcher who brought with him some unusual objects: two mummified specimens that he claimed were the bodies of extraterrestrial beings.

    Really.

The presentation of the mummies on Tuesday by Jaime Maussan, a journalist who has speculated widely on aliens, caused jaws to drop and memes to multiply around the country. The two specimens, which Mr. Maussan said were found in Peru in 2017, were tiny in stature and chalky in color; each had three-fingered hands and what appeared to be shrunken or desiccated heads. “These are nonhuman beings who are not part of our terrestrial evolution,” Mr. Maussan declared under oath, with a sign-language interpreter at his side. The specimens, he added, had been buried at a remote site in Peru and were about 1,000 years old, according to carbon testing carried out by researchers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

The researchers, however, distanced themselves from Mr. Maussan’s conclusions and an independent expert dismissed the exhibition as “shameful.”

Mr. Maussan lives in Mexico and is well known for making such claims while dabbling in the realm of pseudoscience on television and on YouTube, as well as selling his own line of health supplements. His presentation cast attention on the growing fascination in Mexico with the possibility of extraterrestrial life, an outgrowth, some say, of efforts by American authorities to lift the veil on secrecy in government programs that have studied unexplained phenomena. Mr. Maussan did not respond to requests for comment.

Others speaking before Mexico’s Congress included Ryan Graves, a former fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy who has described a close encounter with what looked like a flying sphere encasing a cube. Mr. Graves, who similarly testified this year in the U.S. Congress, told Mexican lawmakers that such encounters were “grossly underreported.” In a statement after speaking to Mexico’s Congress, he criticized the event. “My testimony centered on sharing my experience,” he said on X, formerly Twitter. He added: “But I am deeply disappointed by this unsubstantiated stunt.”

Mr. Maussan was invited by a lawmaker, Sergio Gutiérrez Luna, who said he was interested in hearing different perspectives on a topic of wide interest. “What we did here was an exercise in listening,” Mr. Luna, who belongs to the governing Morena party, told reporters after the presentation. “Learning about subjects, whatever they may be, is done by finding contrasting opinions.”

Still, Mr. Maussan’s presentation stunned many in scientific circles in Mexico. After images of the mummies began circulating, the Institute of Physics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico released a statement making it clear that its researchers had never examined the specimens themselves but had merely done carbon testing in 2017 on skin samples provided by a client.

The university lab which did the testing “disassociates itself from any use, interpretation, or subsequent misrepresentation of the results it provides,” the institute said. “In no case do we draw conclusions about the origin of these samples.”

Similarly, Antígona Segura, one of Mexico’s top astrobiologists, questioned Mr. Maussan’s contentions. “These conclusions are simply not backed up by evidence,” said Dr. Segura, who collaborates with the Nexus for Exoplanet System Science, a NASA initiative to search for life on distant worlds. “The whole thing is very shameful.”

It was unclear how Mr. Maussan got the mummified specimens to Mexico from Peru, whether they are actually from Peru, or if his specimens are reproductions or different from other mummified remains previously said to be extraterrestrial, which are still in Peru. But Peruvian news reports have suggested that Mr. Maussan got wind of some mummies in 2017 from a Peruvian tomb raider. Analysis of the specimens in question in Peru showed that they were manufactured using a combination of human and animal bones, vegetable fibers and synthetic adhesives.

Another analysis in 2021 determined that the head of one of the specimens was a deteriorated llama braincase. While debunking the contention that the mummies were extraterrestrials, the researchers expressed wonder as to how the specimens were made centuries ago, appearing to be “constructions of very high quality.”

Boebert Rides (or Flies) Again! One story claimed they were vaping, which is legal in Colorado, but not in a public place.

Rep. Lauren Boebert Is Ejected From ‘Beetlejuice’ After a Disturbance

The congresswoman was asked to leave after being accused of being loud and recording the show at a moment when many theaters are debating how to deal with raucous audience behavior.

    Michael Paulson
    Sept. 13, 2023

Representative Lauren Boebert, a Republican firebrand from Colorado, was ejected from a touring production of the “Beetlejuice” musical in Denver last weekend, making her the latest case study in an evolving debate over how theaters should respond to raucous audience behavior. Ms. Boebert was accused of “causing a disturbance” at the show, according to an incident report from the city of Denver. The accusation is not an unfamiliar one for Ms. Boebert — last year she heckled President Biden during the State of the Union, and the previous year she refused a search of her bag by Capitol security.

The incident in Denver, which was previously reported by The Denver Post, occurred during a performance of “Beetlejuice,” which, like the film on which it is based, is about a gleefully devious ghost haunting a suburban home. The musical had a rocky run on Broadway, but became a fan favorite, and has been enjoying a strong tour around the country.

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts, which includes the Buell Theater, where “Beetlejuice” is now running, issued a brief statement saying that it has a set of guest policies and that, “We were informed that two patrons were not adhering to the policies which eventually led to them being escorted from the theater.”

The city of Denver, which owns and operates the complex of buildings in which the performing arts center is located, released an incident report that, without naming Ms. Boebert, described some of the details. The report said that in response to audience complaints, officials had told a pair of patrons that “they were causing a disturbance for the area with noise, singing, using their cellphone, and that they need to be respectful to their neighbors.” Early in the second act, after hearing complaints that the patrons were again being loud and recording the show, the theater enlisted help from the Denver Police and asked the party to leave, the report said. They eventually did. On the way out, according to the incident report, “They said stuff like ‘do you know who I am?’” and “I will be contacting the mayor.”

The Denver Post identified Ms. Boebert as the person involved in the incident. Ms. Boebert’s campaign manager, Drew Sexton, issued a statement confirming the incident, but framing it differently.

“I can confirm the stunning and salacious rumors: in her personal time, Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is indeed a supporter of the performing arts (gasp!) and, to the dismay of a select few, enthusiastically enjoyed a weekend performance of ‘Beetlejuice,’ which the Denver Post itself described as ‘zany’, ‘outrageous’, and a ‘lusty riot,’” Sexton said. “She appreciates the Buell Theatre’s strict enforcement of their no photos policy and only wishes the Biden Administration could uphold our border laws as thoroughly and vigorously.”

Ms. Boebert apparently still likes the show, even though she was kicked out. “It’s true, I did thoroughly enjoy the AMAZING Beetlejuice at the Buell Theatre and I plead guilty to laughing and singing too loud!” she posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “Everyone should go see it if you get the chance this week and please let me know how it ends!”

The incident comes at a time when theaters, particularly in England, have been encountering a rash of raucous behavior by overenthusiastic patrons, and have been struggling with whether and how to restrict such behavior. Those concerns also exist on Broadway, but there have been fewer highly publicized confrontations.

The New York Times, paywall and all, is hardly going to pass up a chance to bash conservatives. So this is a larger problem with theatre audiences, not just one over-enthusiastic member of Congress. People in general lack sufficient boundaries nowadays. That generally comes with adverse consequences, both for individuals and for society as a whole. We won't have to wait for a nuclear war to experience the Planet of the Apes, not when the public acts like a troop of baboons.

Lauren Boebert says she ‘fell short of values’ after Beetlejuice groping video

Congresswoman issues apology after being kicked out of performance of musical in Denver for inappropriate behavior

    Gloria Oladipo
    16 Sep 2023

Lauren Boebert, the US congresswoman, has issued an apology after being kicked out of a performance of the musical Beetlejuice in Denver for inappropriate behavior, an experience she has called “difficult and humbling”. Boebert, a Republican representative for Colorado, and a male guest accompanying her were ejected from the musical on 10 September for vaping, recording video and disturbing other patrons during the Sunday performance. Video also showed them eagerly groping each other while in their seats.

Boebert and her campaign manager initially denied that she was vaping and said she was removed for being too loud. But surveillance video obtained by the Denver television station 9News shows the congresswoman openly vaping during the performance. Two sources also confirmed to 9News that Boebert was vaping, a prohibited action that ushers attempted to address with her several times.

A pregnant woman reportedly confronted Boebert and asked the congresswoman to stop vaping, the New York Post reported. But Boebert refused. “These people in front of us were outrageous,” the unnamed woman said to the Post. “I’ve never seen anyone act like that before.” The CCTV video also shows Boebert’s guest fondling her breasts after they had taken their seats. Boebert is also seen petting her guest’s crotch in the venue.

Boebert and her date were later removed by security in the second act of the musical as their disruptive behavior continued. The CCTV footage shows a blurred-out gesture that Boebert flashed at theater security as she was escorted out. Business Insider reported that the gesture appeared to be a middle finger. According to a report of the confrontation from theater security, Boebert and her guest became argumentative with officials. “Do you know who I am?” the congresswoman allegedly asked, according to the theater security report.

Boebert apologized for her behavior in a Friday evening statement.“The past few days have been difficult and humbling, and I’m truly sorry for the unwanted attention my Sunday evening in Denver has brought to the community,” Boebert, as reported by the Colorado Sun. Boebert added that her “public and difficult divorce” has created a “challenging personal time for me and my entire family”.

“I’ve tried to handle it with strength and grace as best I can, but I simply fell short of my values on Sunday,” Boebert said. Boebert filed for divorce from her husband, Jayson, in May. The couple had been married for nearly 20 years.

Boebert’s disturbance at the musical was first confirmed on Tuesday, though the congresswoman initially attempted to suggest she had been removed from the theater for enjoying the performance too much. On X, formerly known as Twitter, Boebert wrote that she “[pleaded] guilty to laughing and singing too loud!”

The Colorado congresswoman is in her second term after narrowly being re-elected in 2022. She is one of the most far-right representatives in Congress, widely known for bigoted statements she has made against LGBTQ+ people, Muslims and other marginalized communities.

A report from the Advocate, the LGBTQ+ news outlet, noted that the man who accompanied her to Beetlejuice was a Democrat named Quinn Gallagher who is the proprietor of a bar that has hosted LGBTQ+ events and drag performances, which have often been targets of the political right.

FYI - you’re responding to a poster who bragged about having spat on fascist doorknobs.

So I’d suppose the answer to your question is “probably not”.

Next, he’ll lay the blame for the uncivil tone on your posts.
