    MacKinder's works were in relation to imperial Europe, and he died before American geo-political dominance.

    Some world-island theory centered around Eastern Europe that doesn't account for the USSR (and its ultimate collapse), nor the stark contrast between prosperity and might of cold-war Eastern v Western Europe; is hardly worth taking seriously in the modern context.

    Who rules East Europe commands the Heartland;
    who rules the Heartland commands the World-Island;
    who rules the World-Island commands the world.
    That doesn't seem to be the case.

    It is often hard to see the case for something, when the case hasn't been made.

    Funny thing is that a great many of those "conspiracy theories" have proven to be true.

    Indeed. The Hitler/Chamberlain comparison is only apt if Chamberlain were sent to refuse to negotiate - as any attempts to negotiate and end of hostilities were promptly ended by dispatching Boris Johnson to do the deed.
    The comparison with Nazi Germany is quite apt. The Russians are trying to seize land, population, and natural resources to enhance their wealth and make themselves more powerful militarily. They are also trying to recover former territories to which they claim historical ownership. Forgetting, of course, how that played out for Adolf & Co.

    Anyway, this all seems awfully profitable. If there's a 5th column, it's not Russian. It's Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, BAE, Rafael, Thales, etc...
    Those defense contractors provide a lot of jobs to a lot of people, a very good thing. They also provide military equipment that provides for our national defense, also a very good thing. Much of that technology ultimately has civilian applications, providing additional benefit.

    Those politicians opposing aid to Ukraine are serving overseas interests, and not those of the American people. They are just like the "anti-war" groups from the 1970s, who professed love, peace, happiness and global brotherhood, but were actually puppets of the Soviets. For Republicans to be doing that today, aping the radical left of times past, is inexcusable, and a betrayal of conservative values. They are almost as bad as the Democrats, whose one saving grace is their support of Ukraine.

    The Hitler analogy is only apt if you ignore all the ways it isn't. It does make for good soundbites and internet arguments though.

    "But the defense industry provided jobs" isn't much better of an argument. Dead Soldiers and bankrupted countries don't care about that. Politicians' campaign donations and corporate presidents do. You make Smedley's argument.

    What's up with those crazy Ruskies? That gas station disguised as a country ran out of missiles and artillery rounds a year ago, but they're still lobbing Zirkon, Iskander and Kinzhals all over the place. Thermobaric TOS-1 rockets are annihilating infantry. They're keep producing more and more military machines. Don't they know they have been sanctioned up the whazoo and are broke? Economy destroyed? They really need to wake up and face reality. Send someone over there to give them a good talking to.
