Yoseka in Greenpoint, Brooklyn has the largest variety of Japanese (and other Asian) pens, ink, paper in US.
Fountain Pen Hospital, also in NYC, has a large selection of Japanese pens.
Anderson Pens in Appleton, WI and Chicago, has a huge inventory of Japanese pens & inks.
All are physical stores which I prefer rather than ordering from a company which offers only online sales. These three have a large online sales presence. I have purchased from all three and have been completely pleased with each transaction. All have very friendly staff and great customer service. Good luck with your hunt.

I've been very happy with Jetpens, located in San Jose California. They specialize in Japanese pens, inks, papers, washi, and other goodies. I purchased my Pilot 912 with a Posting nib from them. If you are looking for high-end Japanese pens such as Nakaya, Namiki, or Danitrio, then nibs.com has them. They are located in Los Angeles. I don't know how good they are now that John Mottishaw is no longer involved, since he sold the company last year.

You can often get great prices on stuff from eBay. For example I recently got an Imperial Black Pro Gear for $206 shipped (and it went down to $199 shipped shortly after that).

For price, usually Amazon. A lot of Japanese vendors shipping their stock to U.S. warehouses and selling through Amazon.

If it's a Pilot 823 or 845 you are after, the Tokyo Quill Pen Shop has excellent prices and service, and rapid and fairly inexpensive shipping. The owner typically throws in a free cheap ballpoint and an origami of Rodan the Flying Monster (or maybe its a swan) with each purchase.

Catherine van Hove has a fantastic collection both in her lovely store in Diest, Belgium, as well as online:

I was looking at the Pilot Custom Urushi pens and I noticed that the dealers in Japan had much lower prices than the American pen dealers. Has anyone had any experience purchasing directly from Japan?
I appreciate any help on this.

Also, how are the Japanese dealers on eBay?

I have purchased pens from Tokyo Quill and Pensachi with no issues. YMMV.

I've purchased in Japan and there can be a huge savings. Lower retail price combined with no tax and right now, a strong USD/JPY exchange and I got my Urushi #50 for about half off. I'll be on a quest for a Nakaya in my next trip.

Otherwise, Pen Venture just announced they are now carrying Pilot and Namiki. I have enjoyed all my interactions with Emy and Pen Venture and would definitely buy from them, if not for my occasional trips to Japan in person.

I can give an "indirect" +1 for Tokyo Pen Shop Quill. I haven't done business with them but a close friend has and was very pleased with the responsiveness and prices. As noted above, selection seems limited to Pilot 823/845.

I have purchased several Pilot pens (thought they have other Japanese brands) from Penpen-Avenue and had nothing but a great experience. The pricing is much lower than anything in the states and there is generally a better selection of nibs.

I've ordered pens directly from Japan a couple of times, and had no problems whatsoever.
