I'm also not a fan of step downs. Recently I have been admiring the works of tuduriya (https://www.instagram.com/tuduriya.jp/). The cap only covers the nib. I think it looks great and I would assume that the threading above the nib wouldn't bother me at all. Are there any downsides to this design?
I post fountain pen stuff on IG: jreugenl

I had a Franklin-Christoph No. 2 with that design to minimize the step-down, and it was a comfortable writer.

They might be pretty to look at before the cap comes. When it does, *plonk*.

Should read, "... the cap comes off."

Just discovered editing not possible from the phone. Oh well.

I'll admit I don't really like stepdowns, both from the practical point of view, and from the aesthetic. I think they can work with pens that have very long sections, but I prefer a smoother outline and my hands thank me for it.

I like the Sailor ebony desk pen - https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/Sailor.../dp/B00EVMWZYW - with its bulbous cap. That's a nice outline. But I can't find the pen anywhere ... and it costs a bomb. Stupidly didn't get one when I had the chance.

Another pen I love is the ASA Nauka (based on the Oldwin Classic) which again has a smooth profile when uncapped. A really lovely pen.

And I have a Tuduriya "moonlit" pen coming via Kickstarter, I hope.

I agree with several above: the stepdown is neither comfortable nor good looking. It seems like a lazy design to me. I don't buy pens like that.

"Lazy design" is a great analogy.

But lots of pens have very significant step downs, and apparently they sell.
The only pen with a step down I ever got used to is the Pilot Metropolitan. I have a few.
My other pen is a Montblanc.

And my other blog is a tumblr!
