    Default Sheaffer coastal blue

Here’s another ink I purchased because I like the bottle. Sheaffer's new line of inks moved production from Slovenia to China and revived an older tilt-well bottle design.

(The Sheaffer 5-30 used in the writing and drawing samples is my first attempt at re-saccing a pen. So far, so good.)

I don’t have any of Sheaffer’s previous range of Slovenian-made inks to compare. Based on online reviews, Sheaffer coastal blue leans greener than Sheaffer Skrip turquoise. To my eye, it falls somewhere between Lamy turquoise and Lamy turmaline. I would call it green.

    Waterproofness: don’t count on it.

I prefer black or blue-black ink for longer-form writing (easier on the eye) and use brighter, contrasting shades mainly for annotation, marking up, etc. Sheaffer coastal blue is dark enough to be legible for general writing but bright enough to stand out if used for annotation, which makes it quite versatile.

Thanks for this. That seems like a somewhat new color for them, and looks quite nice. BTW, I've heard it reported that after this initial stab at new/old bottles, Sheaffer has reconsidered and is going to do a different bottle. I had heard it was both from costs and the lack of durability of the cap. Hope that isn't the case, though.

And congrats on the restoration - handsome pen!

Thanks, Jon. The 5-30 had a functional sac when I got it. I found it a bit too short (102mm/4") for regular use and it doesn't post securely, so that sac died of neglect. But it turns out I like drawing with stubby (in length not nib) pens the same way I prefer short pencils, so it'll get more use now.

I can see how the revived bottle design could be costly to make. The packaging suggests a luxury play. Guess that didn't work out. I'm glad I got several bottles on sale.

I'm fairly certain this is what I heard from Sam F. at Pendemonium, and she has always been a reliable source on Sheaffer news. So hard to tall with this company anymore, so who knows what will transpire?

I'm glad that you reviewed a green-blue (not my preference in color) this time so I'm not tempted to buy yet another bottle of ink. You got me with the renegade, but not this time.

The simplicity is born of necessity — I have (relatively) few inks and little knowledge about them.
I guess it's the Tintin-esque quiff (a happy accident) that evokes Hergé?

    ---

Having added comparative chromatography to the first in this Sheaffer review series ('renegade' blue), it seems only fair to do the same here ...

From top to bottom: Lamy turquoise, Sheaffer coastal blue, Lamy turmaline

    I like the simplicity too.

The ink reminds me of Parker Blue/Black, Waterman’s Mysterious Blue, or Montblanc’s Blue Hour.

I don't have Parker blue-black or Montblanc blue hour but a bottle of Waterman mysterious blue is inbound, so I may compare that later.

Blue Hour was a limited edition. Highly disappointing given the price…

We both know it's not the inks that make the artist but le contraire!

    Yes it is.

Sheaffer coastal blue above, Waterman mysterious blue below.

I do like the color! And the chromas. Many thanks for these reviews.
My other pen is a Montblanc.

And my other blog is a tumblr!
