    Default Omas Galileo

I have an Omas Galileo for sale. The pen has a medium, gold nib and is in good condition. These early 90's Omas pens were known to have issues with the nib collars cracking, so I had Ron Zorn fashion a new nib collar for this pen so this would not become an issue. Asking $900 OBO, shipping included in the CONUS.

FWIW, the nib collars are made using PEEK, which is very strong and pretty much everything resistant.

    Are they the correct color?
As I recall, I declined one a few years ago because, when I looked it over, the collar was tan-like and not black. It's only a matter of taste, of course, but I did not think looked right.
Perhaps I am mistaken, it's been a few years.

The new collar is a white/off white color. It matches the white in the pen material well.

The ones I've been making are tan because that was what I could get at a reasonable price. PEEK is expensive, and there is a fair bit of waste when making a collar. Even scrap PEEK sells for over $20/foot for 1/2" rod stock. Delrin is black, and is I think what Omas was using because it machines easily. The problem is that Delrin weakens and breaks down when exposed to acid, like acid that you find in ink. All of the collars that have broken are discolored and brittle, indicating damage from ink. Most people don't care.

Thanks for clarifying. Yes, most certainly it is a matter of personal taste and I can easily see where the tan color would "work" with this particular celluloid.

It is a matter of fact that the collars used in the early iterations of the "new era" Paragons were awful, just as you & the OP have described. One can almost count upon the fact that if they have a celluloid Paragon which was produced in the early 90's that the collar will deteriorate if the pen sees significant use.

Omas made a significant revision to the material they used for their collars sometime in 1995-1996 and these later iteration collars are much more durable. Given the Galileo series was produced in 1993 (to commemorate Galileo and the 650th Anniversary of the University of Pisa), it makes sense that this pen required the replacement of its collar.

I agree 100%, the current collar should last for the rest of the pen's lifetime.

The last round of pens before Omas closed are beautiful pens, but an awful design. Both that clear inner barrel and the collar are ridiculously thin and break easily. I can't tell you how many requests I've had to fix them. I think that replacement is the only option. If someone decided to reverse engineer and make them out of a better material, they'd have repair people knocking down their doors to get them.

    Correct.
But we (or at least me) were not talking about them.
The conversation, as I understood it, was with regard to the Arte Italiana series of celluloid pens (aka "old Paragons") which were produced between 1991 and 2000.

    Tough stuff.

In the lab we use PEEK tubing for HPLC(high pressure liquid chromatography). It has to hold some sometimes nasty mixes of solvents(acetonitrile and methanol are common, but basically anything imaginable) at 6000psi or higher. Initially I was reluctant to give up my stainless steel tubing, but PEEK is actually a better choice in some situations and is a lot easier to fit/handle.

PEEK can last nearly as long as stainless steel in HPLC if used properly. Considering that a fountain pen section stresses it a lot less, I expect it really would last forever.

How about a direct picture displaying this new Nib collar?

They aren't likely to have the tools to take the nib and collar out of the section - and shouldn't! All that you see looking at the very end of the section is a ring. If this isn't the one, it would be very much like it. I now have black PEEK to make the collars.

It is good to know he has begun making the replacement collars in the correct color. I realize for some it is no big deal but, at least for me, it's a game changer.
