    Default Rhodia A4 lined pads

I have always thought that Rhodia was pretty good paper. I bought three A4 Rhodia pads today and the paper is almost too smooth, the nib doesn't appear to gain traction on the paper and the writing experience is not good at all.

I have tried several different pens but all with Visconti ink.

The pens don't exhibit this style of behaviour on other papers.

More than a little disappointed in the paper to be honest, it has previously been my go to brand.

I appreciate that there is a trinity, ink, nib and paper but have never had a problem in the past.

Rhodia paper can be slickery. Especially if it is plain without any lines or grids. It seems that Rhodia actually uses a bit grainier paper for papers that use their ink for grids / lines. That could be only my observations, but that is my experience.

    Thank you.

We are all used to the feeling of a pen gliding across the page but this Rhodia paper is making hard work of a well set up nib despite feeling very smooth to the touch.

I am going to try again with a different ink and a wet nib and see how we go.

Totally subjective, but I notice slight differences between Rhodia lined pads (orange) and the Rhodia Ice pads (white), the latter of which sometimes feel a bit drier and a tad less slippery/smooth.

    These pads are the Orange.

If the paper has t changed over the years such as a coating being added, and the ink and nib work well on other papers then possibly it is something to do with some other contaminant such as hand cream, I will try again with a sheet of paper to rest on.

Rhodia paper in these pads should be their 80gsm superfine vellum paper. I think it's fairly standard Rhodia paper. If you look at Cult Pens they supply some Rhodia R pads that have slightly heavier 90gsm superfine vellum paper that's the same grade as Clairefontaine Triomphe.

Superfine vellum will always be a surface that is very smooth/slippery for writing on.

If you prefer textured paper with ridges and hollows then look for laid paper rather than vellum. That's the simple difference between rough and smooth.

Thank you. You are correct it is the 80g paper.

I am going to sit down with all the variables, paper, pen and ink including a hand-rest paper sheet and see what cones about. I have used this paper in the best and loved it, this time it is one word dry and one word wet and that is with previously perfectly behaved nibs.

    Thanks for your input.

I'm not familiar with Visconti ink at all, if I was in your sitch I'd try one of those same pens with a Pelikan royal blue or black ink.

Thank you, I think that you may well be right, just darned annoying when I have far too many of the blasted things in cartridge. It is odd because these cartridges work very well on every other paper of mine.

    Thanks

Sorry, I think I may have wasted your time.

I have pulled out the double page from the stapled centre and all works well, not a hint of the alternating dry/wetness and the feel that the pen was draggy on the page which had been the case when using the first page of the pad.

    The paper was perfect.

Not a waste at all. I notice a significant difference in a lot of papers, even within the same brands.
My other pen is a Montblanc.

And my other blog is a tumblr!

Yes, I know just what you mean, although I haven't worked out just why page 1 was a shocker but a page in the middle of the pad was perfect. Perhaps it was close to an air conditioning vent and had a stream of hot or cold air plus contaminants that flowed over page 1 but not page 39.

Interesting variation through the pad. Puzzling.
