Very sad. I'm not especially a royalist but she meant so much to us that will pass with her.

Condolences to all those in the Kingdom and Commonwealth. Her presence was deeper and wider than the title and she will be mourned and missed. I was in the middle of a chat with a colleague in London when we simultaneously heard the news. History in real-time.

I think I’ll use one of my burgundy aero “51”s in memory of my former boss.

Swearing the Oath of Allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was one of the proudest moments in my life. It was an honour to serve a Head of State whose reign was marked by outstanding devotion to duty, by kindness to all she met, and by a graciousness to which we all should aspire. Both in my time in uniform and as a civilian, the dignity Her Majesty brought to her position, her country, and her work was and is an inspiration.

Until this popped up today in a news feed, I had forgotten that I once played for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, in 1983. On a very brief stop in San Diego, among their events was a ceremony at the Old Globe. Composer Conrad Susa (I think) composed some music for the event and a small ensemble of local musicians performed. Actor David Ogden Stiers (of the “MASH” cast) spoke on behalf of the Globe (and kept us amused w stories during our long lockdown while awaiting the Queen’s arrival).

None of the musical ceremony is shown, but it’s in the middle of this period news report. My/our brush with royalty…

May she rest in peace and her family find strength and support through their grief.

Very sad... I'm not a monarchist, - a Brit turned Aussie. In clear conscience I could only become an Australian citizen when they changed the oath of allegiance wording. I could not see the logic of swearing allegiance to a foreign monarch to become an Australian citizen. BUT... She was a truly wonderful person and we are much poorer with her passing. After 'Queenie' in Black Adder, Liz came a very close second!

I find myself a bit ambivalent about Queen Elizabeth's passing now that I am old enough to understand more of the world. I am reasonably certain that she nearly always tried to do the right thing as she saw it. The question becomes in some instances whether it was in fact the right thing at all. I won't judge her harshly in any case. She was just as fallible as the rest of us from time to time. On the other hand, I can understand the tremendous antipathy exhibited by some who suffered under British Colonial Rule. As the public face of the British Empire, there really isn't any escaping it.

The entire ceremony today? yesterday? was impressive and moving. It was a fitting farewell. I wonder if my Canadian relative, an ardent monarchist, watched it as well.

Whatever you have understood and learned about the world in your old age it doesn't stop you scoring an F in timing.

The Queen had a pen pal in North Dakota for 70 years! I think that that is a Parker fountain pen in the Queen's hand in the photo:

What a beautiful service today at St. George's at Windsor. Very moving! (I did not see the earlier service at Westminster).
