In 2022, it’s the difference between living in a democracy than a theocracy, Kaz.

    No! (not me)

15,000 is a huge number. A large part of this is religious in nature, which some folks take more seriously than Americans are used to.

Well, sure. But the level of "seriousness" does not really capture the interplay of the righteous justification of mass murder and the evolution of the notion of "justice" over the centuries. What I mean is that a religious believer can be very, very devout and "serious" without carrying out all of the homicidal or torturous actions that their religious texts condone.
Not surprisingly, we disagree. I suspect it's over how we read "serious."
I consider you a serious Christian. It's pretty straightforward for me. I am a serious liberal. Looks like you are restricting the use of the term to some special meaning. Or, as I suspect, you were using understatement, and there is a more accurate word or phrase for what *you* mean.

synonyms: earnest, thoughtful, deliberate, sober, somber, committed,....(the synonym soup that I can think of)

Did you mean something other than these common synonyms? Perhaps, ardent? Fervent? Rabid? Inflexible? Radical? Murderously orthodox? Zealous?

This is being reported as inaccurate now. Five people have been sentenced to death. The rest is a misinterpretation (apparently) of the parliamentary vote on infidels or whatever.

    Time has an article clarifying.

Protesters are reportedly torching Ayatollah Khomeni’s home/museum.

Everything is suspect. Ghost of Kiev narratives.

Regardless, this seems to be as big (or bigger) than their "green movement / green revolution" of 2009/2010. That was put down brutally.
