Greetings from Montgomery, Texas!
Hi everyone! My name is Cliff and I present myself to you as a new member. This is my very first post at Fountain Pen Geeks. I haven't even created my profile yet. My fountain pen interest centers primarily around vintage pens. I love finding unique looking or historically significant pens and then coaxing them back to life. I bring with me my username from another fountain pen site so that those of you who know me there will recognize me immediately.
So, what is the significance of "Bristol24?" My wife and I have been avid sailors for the majority of our married life (42 years). Our sailboat, a Bristol 24, is one made in Bristol Rhode Island back in 1977. We've sailed her all up and down the California coast (primarily Southern California) and a little bit on San Francisco Bay. Since our move to Texas last March, we've been looking to get back on the water but that probably won't happen for another few months. Moving 1,800 miles is an involved process.
But back to fountain pens. One of the reasons I got into fountain pens was for keeping our logbook. After taking a good splash down the hatch (not a normal occurrence but it can happen in rough weather) I decided that I needed to use a more water resistant pen and ink. This was back in 2007. I had a couple of cartridge fountain pens already but all of the cartridges I had ran at the first sight of water. I wanted to get a pen that could use Hero 231 Carbon Black because my research told me it was quite waterproof. I ended up with a 3-color set of Hero 329 fountain pens, one of which I kept on the boat along with a bottle of Hero 231. It was through this that I learned of fountain pen maintenance and of other water resistant inks. My first vintage fountain pen was a Parker Super 21 followed by a BHR Esterbrook Dollar Pen. Today, I have about 90 pens, mostly all vintage with the exception of a few Hero 616 (to give away) and a Levenger True Writer that was a gift from my wife years ago. I am especially fond of the Parker "51" and have 8 of them and am always on the lookout for another.
Well...enough about me. I look forward to being a participant here, connecting with new friends as well as others whose usernames I recognize from somewhere else...
