Default Chinese unrest - news and analysis

We probably need a thread for this. I'll try to kick it off with what I understand so far (without a bunch of links), but like Ukraine this is an environment rife for misinformation. There is a lot of money at stake, and China is key to the global supply chain from assembling devices for Apple and other manufacturers, to the cheap stuff you buy at the dollar store.

I think what we know so far is that the draconian lockdowns have triggered protests. Twitter is full of video clips of people standing off against police, tearing down barricades, etc... It seems that some of the reason it has escalated is that Chinese officials were locking people in their apartments, and a fire broke out which killed 10(?).

Some media outlets said it was simply protests at one of the Foxconn factories (this refers to a report of people being evicted and their belongings thrown out windows), and that there's nothing serious going on. While a specific instance may have been the case, that narrative didn't survive first contact with reality; and there's clearly something bigger happening.
