Had a 10 minute deluge that was a sight to see. My grandfather would have called it a toad-strangler.

Sun came out and skies were clear an hour later.

It washed out a couple of spots in the driveway, so I swapped the stump grinder for a box blade and leveled it all back out.

Another perfect Saturday I pulled out of the closet of perfect Saturdays. Playing on a tractor is never work.

M: I came here for a good argument.
A: No you didn't; no, you came here for an argument.
M: An argument isn't just contradiction.
    A: It can be.
M: No it can't. An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
    A: No it isn't.
M: Yes it is! It's not just contradiction.
A: Look, if I argue with you, I must take up a contrary position.
M: Yes, but that's not just saying 'No it isn't.'
    A: Yes it is!

    Not for me.

It could be sitting around in a robe like the Big Lebowski sipping White Russians (metaphorically - I don't drink). It could be working hard outside in the crisp fall air. Taking the wife out to dinner or the art museum. Mowing the yard or straightening up a workbench and listening to a podcast. It could be reading a book and smoking a cigar.

I wake up, look outside, and then browse through my "closet of perfect Saturdays", and pick one (or two, or three).

Watched this guy watching me watching him. Can't grow a wildflower meadow if the deer keep eating them.

Attended my niece's wedding over the weekend in SE Missouri.

Her husband is quite proud of his family's history in the area, and the wedding was in front of the family cabin built in 1897.

I pointed out to my niece that her great-great grandfather is buried in the same town, and (although the burial site is unknown) her great-great-great grandfather arrived in that town the year Missouri became a state (1821).

Based on the pointer finger and sly smile she was giving her husband later, I think she was pleased with the new knowledge.

Took the car in for an oil change, washed it and filled it up (wife is leaving to visit family Wednesday), mowed the grass, and bumped this thread above the spam.

Attended summer course "Early Modern Europe". Last week was reading of Bernal Diaz, account of the conquest of Mexico, plus letters of Cortes. Background on the reconquista, the unification of Aragon and Castile.

Key: the "Indians" were frightened by cannons and horses, but then fought hard and long. Cortes won through by prying apart the vassal-states of the Aztec Empire. He looked to each weaker state, saying, I will help you free yourself from that bully Montezuma. The "caciques" of each vassal-state pledge allegiance to King Charles V of Spain.

A free version of Bernal Diaz, "Conquest of New Spain": https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub...74-images.html

Next section: the Reformation, which begins about the same time Cortes launches his expedition. Emperor Charles V declares for the Papacy, proclaims that Martin Luther is an outlaw.

Did a lot of pruning in the yard. I need to figure out how to get rid of my growing pile of branches!

Also continued my decluttering project. One more stop in the living room, then just finish work to make sure everything in the living room has a home.

Next week, I'll empty the kitchen just enough to continue this decluttering project: its location in the house and proximity to the back door make it a perfect staging area for moving things around the house or out of the house. Then I'll start on the basement. I hope to finish that by the end of next week. In a perfect world, maybe I can finish the whole house if I put in a few long days!
