    Default Messing around. . .

I've never tried to reshape nibs before. But today I'm just playing around and thought "what the heck?" So I grabbed one of the pens that some of you will know from a certain nib smoothing student kit and had at it. I kinda like the result:

Then, and I don't recommend this, I grabbed a Pilot Metropolitan I had with a twisted up nib (not that my dropping it had anything to do with that) that I couldn't get to write smoothly anyway. I pulled off the nib, made it a bit pointy, and shaved in the shoulders to make the tines a little thinner.

So, I don't think either is brilliant, or done on the right pen, or with the right tools. But, man, I had fun today

Oh, meant to leave the student pen uncapped in the first one. Here's before and after, or rather, the one I didn't mess with and the one I did:

That's really neat. Congratulations. Someday I'm going to try this with a spare Safari nib.

Thanks! I had toyed with the idea before, but was hesitant to use anything but sandpaper and micro mesh. Today, I went ahead and used the Dremel and was pretty happy with it. Now I want to get some sort of stand.

I hope you have fun "Someday" when you do try it!

BTW, I was in Chicago for a conference in April and spent a few hours at Century Pens.

How do you think that the meisters learned to do what they do? They all had to start somewhere. I have plenty of crap pens and nibs yet I am still afraid to try this. The only nibs that I have changed were by accident. It looks like you have the right approach and attitude. Good luck, until you have enough experience not to need luck anymore.

Like Jeph said, and I do think either is brilliant effort. Now, you need the courage to do it on 18C nibs. All the best! :-)
