Default How to get the nib out a vintage Lucky Curve section?

I wasn't able to pull it out. The section was already brown when I got it so I soaked it in water but that didn't work either. Frank Dubiel's book says that the standard practice was to cut off the Lucky Curve. Any other things that might be worth trying before I cut it off?

That can be a tough call, and I'm not a repair person, and have only done a couple for myself. Wisdom from the "Pen Repair" book by Oldfield and Marshall suggests that you do want to remove the nib first, and after soaking they mention warming the section with hot air, then wiggling the nib side-to-side to loosen. Some luck is involved, I think. Lastly, their book, now in the 4th edition (IIRC) is very worth the small investment, and certainly supercedes much of what was in Frank's book, or at least widens the techniques to be a little less... brute force.

Is the nib broken or what makes it necessary to remove it from the section?

You do need to wiggle the nib out first. Using a grippy pad and grip by the shoulders of the nib.
