Default Parker 51 solid 14ct gold

    Hi all,

I have this Parker 51 which I might want to sell but I can’t find any information about this model and it’s value.

The cap, barrel, clip and nib are hallmarked solid 14k gold (585).
It is in good condition and works properly.
The only downside is that there is a smal dent at the backside of the barrel (please see pics). I think that there are people out there that make it invisible again.

The nib is a EF and it writes a nice smooth EF line with minor feedback.
    It fills properly.

Beside the gold hallmarks and 585 I can’t find any other texts on this pen (the filler does have alle the user instructions and Paker 51 on it).

I do not have a box or papers.

Does anyone know more about this pen and its possible value?

    Thanks!

It's a beautiful pen to be sure. However, I can't help but wonder if the barrel and cap have been placed on a different pen since they both surely must have started life with a pen that had a gold or gold plated section band.

That is a nice pen indeed and it seems to be well made. I doubt that the gold parts are an official Parker product though. My guess is that this is one of the high-end solid gold pens that were made in the 1950s in Argentina or Brazil by a local goldsmith.

I have no idea about value. I saw one of these 'unofficial' solid gold P51 pens selling on ebay a few months ago for around 700€, which was much more than I expected.

    Thank you for the replies.
It’s probably not a official Parker as there is no brand mark on it. It is however a very well made pen.
The section band is silver colored indeed. Luckily it is easy to swap to a gold version. I winder if there are any solid gold section bands around.
It’s a great pen and the solid gold overlay has a very nice color and shine.

I’m not sure if I’m selling it or keeping it. My interest is in modern pens and I almost never use vintage pens.

    Thanks again!

It would be fairly straightforward to get one made by copying the sliver coloured one but a GP version might be more hardwearing against the cap clutch.

I don't think so and the chrome clutch ring is also what you expect on these pens because the solid gold cap and barrel were typically made around a standard Parker 51 pen.

I wasn't aware that the clutch ring was only ever made in chrome. Some pictures make them look more gold coloured than others.

indeed, I was possibly not clear: the clutch ring can be chrome or gold filled but the OP referred to solid gold. Some of the clutch rings in chrome can be found with a gold layer in the central recessed area of the ring, as seen in the referred picture. And the Parker 51 Presidential, at least the 9ct solid gold version, had a clutch ring that was gold filled all-over but not solid gold.

The clutch rings were not solid gold. Some had a gold wash in the center grove, others did not.

A few high-end jewellers in Europe also made Parker 51 in solid gold. The prices of them have a big volubility, some of these aftermarket add-ons are pretty expensive because they have the jeweller brand, and some of them only have the value of the gold content. I have also seen caps for Parker 51 made of silver with small ornaments in gold, some of them made in Mexico in the early 50s.
