    Default Favourite Black Ink?

    Hello,

I've been away from buying any new inks for a few years now but still have all my previously purchased bottles.

At the moment, I have Caran d'Ache Chromatics Cosmic Black, Kaweco Pearl Black & Sailor Kiwa-Guro Permanent Black. From them, I like the Sailor best for it's rich black colour, but it only lasts for a while with me and then seems to create a bit of a flow problem as the nib clogs up with the permanent ink and requires regular flushing.

So I'm after a new everyday use black ink. I'd like a well behaved strong black colour and see from browsing around that there's many new brands on the market since I last shopped for ink. What would you recommend?

    Cheers,

    Mark

Yes you're right, that is where it should be. If only we had a moderator who we could ask to move it. Sadly not.

I don't have a personal suggestion because I don't use black ink much, other than in brush pens and sumi ink with calligraphy brushes, but this might be helpful: https://www.jetpens.com/blog/The-Bes...Pen-Inks/pt/20

I like Platinum Carbon Black, if you're into permanent inks. Noodler's has also some very nice permeant blacks if permanence is what you're looking for.
Alternatively if waterproofness is important you can go the Iron gall route. Depending the paper you use, the nib width wetness, the ink oxidizes into black over time.
    Check:
    https://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread...ing-iron-gall), Essri etc.

Otherwise Herbin Pearl Noir, seems to be a favourite for everyone.
I have used Sailor Black in cartridge form, which is very easy to clean and has some water resistance if memory serves me right.

Define for yourself the other properties of the ink besides "black". Perle noire is a good dye ink, maybe not quite as black as the Aurora but not nearly as durable as Kiwa-Guro or Platinum Carbon. However, it is sufficiently durable for most everyday applications.

If you consider one of the older inks, basic Parker Quink black is very trouble free; flows dependently and if left too long in the pen it tends to clean up with out any fuss. Much the same for Pelikan 4001 black, both of these have likely been though changes over the decades, but the current ones behave much as they always have. They are not the darkest blacks either, but as mentioned well behaved in the long run too.

Regular Sailor black is my favorite, and if you want something really low maintenance (not that regular Sailor black is high maintenance), there's always the very understated and underrated Lamy black.

I prefer low maintenance black inks:
    Aurora
    Herbin Perle Noire
    Montblanc
    Parker Quink
    Pelikan 4001
    Sheaffer Skrip

I have a brand new bottle of Pelikan Edelstein Onyx which I haven't tried.

De Atramentis Document Black. A rich, deep beautiful well-behaved black that is also not only bulletproof, but bombproof.
For regular ol' black ink that runs when it gets wet, I've developed a fondness for Parker Quink.

This isn't the same as the archival black is it?

The problem with bombproof writing is you need bombproof paper.

That's only if you intend to set off a bomb in close proximity to the document.
Do people shoot bullets at bulletproof ink, me wonders.

That's why I would never call an ink bulletproof. Here's something I once wrote on the penexchange:

In this respect, the EG cannot come close to the nano document inks, which is why I would always recommend them for light use. As far as "classic" use of files is concerned, a milkmaid invoice and a quote:
    9 months light test x 30 days = 270 days; x 12 hours of light = 3240 hours of light.
    20 min file usage/day x 250 days/year = 5000 min : 60 = 83 hours per year.
    3240 : 83 = 39 years.

    Cepasaccus wrote:
If I use my cell phone to measure the light intensity directly at the window, as in the test, and at a distance of 1m from the window, as on a desk, then the difference in brightness is a factor of 20.

    39 x 20 = 780 years. Other aging factors are also relevant.
