Default I take photos of all the letters I send

Usually several to make sure they can be read. I've heard some of you type out the contents of your handwritten letters, I've heard some of you make a second handwritten copy. I just take pictures with my phone. Obviously It'd be rude to show you. Does anyone else do that?

You are not alone. I take photos of every letter I write and also make a copy of them into a Paperchase Da Vinci notebook.

I like to record them so that when I read back through the letters I've received I can follow the threads.

It also helps to remind me of pen pal's up and coming anniversaries etc.

If it is an administration purpose letter, i'll usually take a photo or scan the letter to Evernote.
If it is a correspondent letter, just like an old school instant camera.. Write once and send it free as is, without archive.

Gosh, no. But it's a good idea. For as long as my new-found enthusiasm for envelope making lasts I'll be taking photos of them, at least.

I'm trying to do this as well, mainly because sometimes when I'm writing to a new penpal and some time has passed since my last letter it can be hard to remember what I already wrote about. Unfortunately most times I forget to take a picture and only remember it when the letter is already on its way. Then I take some notes about the contents of the letter.

I don't copy or photo any of my letters. Maybe in the future but not currently.

I remember to take a photo every time after I seal the envelope. So far no photos.

    I did that yesterday. Twice.

I thought I'd posted this already but don't see it. Can you explain how you do this, or even better, post pics?

    Thanks

You did post it, just in a different thread. I don't remember which one but I did see it.

The good old fashion way: I copy the letters by hand (with the same pen and ink combination I used in the original letter).

P.S. I think you posted this in one of the pen group threads.

Yeah, I scan many letters before mailing them. Recently, a friend didn't get a snail mail, and so I emailed her the scans. That's not why I do it, though. Just like to keep a record of a few letters so that I remember what I've blathered on about.

I usually copy my letters for the same reason jde does. I was thinking of scanning to whole lot and filing the originals away.
What, throw them out, bah, never throw out, you might need it someday!

Least that was my father's response to my mother's comment to throw something out.

I have two ScanSnap (or SnapScan, I always get them mixed up) scanners: one that sits on my desk at work, the other a little portable guy I have at home and sometimes carry when traveling for work. I don't scan letters in or out, but if you *do*, I can't recommend the ScanSnap enough: the desktop works pretty well with even heavy paper and accommodate from 2x2in to 8.5x14in. And it scans a 10 page document in about 15 seconds, converts to PDF or images, scans to Evernote, etc. None of the tedium of flat beds.

When I take pictures of documents with my phone I use Scanner Pro, which makes the phone function a bit more like a scanner (edge detection, adjustments, "scan" to PDF, connections to Dropbox, Evernote, etc).

In both cases the documents dump into Evernote where they are indexed for search, etc. Evernote isn't half bad at recognizing my terrible handwriting.

Meant to add: for some reason the idea of scanning the letters I send feels like cheating my own internal rules about correspondence. I do keep a "letter diary" where I record the dates of letters in and out, including whatever tuck-ins I include: http://inkprone.passiontask.com/2013/my-letter-diary/

Just took a look at your letter diary and I must say it's pretty cool. Mine is similar, however I tend to notate the letters when they arrive before reading them. Maybe a when I'm starting a new year (unless I fill this book up first, which is doubtful) I'll do some notations. That would be very helpful. Thanks for sharing it. I'll have to check around, but we had another thread/discussion on this very thing that you may find useful.

Thanks...that was an interesting thread, indeed!

I belatedly realized I should make notes of pen/ink/paper used in my letter diary. Which means indicating which correspondents are interested in such things (the non-fp / ink / paper enthusiasts tend to think those notes on the letter are a little weird). I've definitely found that the annotations help me bring back ideas that were neglected or forgotten or there wasn't room for. And I hate to send the same little piece of origami, quote or other tuck-in to the same person twice! So tracking that is useful...

Someone mentioned that they notate their outgoing letters using the pen/ink combo they wrote the letters in. I find that helpful, not only in distinguishing the incoming (only written in black) but outgoing (tends to be more colourful) but ensures that I don't always write to that person using the same colour ink (although that has happened). There have been times I've forgotten to notate what paper/pen/ink combo I've used on the letter and it helps when someone asks that I can just look it up. Pen/ink/paper enthusiasts tend to "shop" vicariously via some letters we've received. Not only are we sharing information about ourselves and our interests but also sharing paper/pen/ink on a secondary front. I've considered put notations on envelopes as I've read the letters but so far that hasn't happened. The only issue with annotations in the diary is that sometimes I'm thinking of something as I'm driving and the diary is at home. But yes, I notate tuck-ins, both sent and received in my diary. One day when I figure out how to blur names I'll take a photo of a page out of my diary and post it up somewhere.
