Tiny but mighty Tortoise.

A case of Pelikan M400 Tortoise with Italic broad nib.
It looks exactly like a M800 Tortoise but smaller and agile. The tortoise shell is amazing with translucency difficult to capture on camera. Holds good amount of ink so that you do not run out of fuel. I fired up with Diamine ancient copper and oh boy, it is performs beautifully. The nib seems to works perfectly and does not even require any tunning. Smooth and wet. Overall, it is a great, small pen to carry around. I am just a bit irritated by the "tiny" attribute to the pen (which might be meant lighted-heartedly, though), as for people who are used to smaller pens the M200/400 size is either normal or already on the bigger side of pens.

I wish I could get a nib like that for one of mine. Then I might even write with it.

Fritz Schimpf (German stationery shop) sold these. I had one once, and yes, it was a great nib, but if you are just looking for nib that gives you this feeling, you might also be very happy with one of the music nibs Sailor offers. Especially the smaller 14 k-versions for the 1911s/Pro Gear Slim sizes come in affordable pens.

The M400 with this nib combination made me buy the pen. I never knew IB for M400 size existed.

Thank you for the kind comments.
I mean tiny like a small wonder of sorts. It is equal in beauty to M800 tortoise. Pound per pound the nib is mighty on M400. I use these sizes M400/800/1000. M600 is missing -If it does have an Italic broad,I will get the black tortoise.

Thanks for the information but I'm not just looking for a nib that gives me this feeling. I have no Sailor pens and am not buying any more pens because I need to sell some rather than to buy others. My Pelikans don't have nibs that I like so I never write with them. If one of them had this nib then I would probably write with it. I saw one for sale on Dan's web-site but that cost more than I paid for my pen so I wouldn't be paying that sort of a price.

I have a Pelikan M-205 that came with a broad nib and a medium nib. I sent them off to Michael Masuyama, and he ground the broad into an oblique stub and the medium into a cursive italic. Both of the nibs are now an absolute delight to write with.

Can't agree more. Masuyama tuned nibs are a delight and a treasure.

Excellent photo but I would not call the M400 series pens or their like (the OG vintage ones) "tiny". They are definitely smaller when compared to the behemoth or honking whale-of-a-pen, the M1000, etc.

I would call their size either "excellent" or "just right" (and I have size 11-12/XL mitts). Might be something to do with them being designed and built in the "Golden Era of Fountain Pens", the same as Parker "51". As in, when they were indispensable daily use items.
